Interested in making a DIY gas firepit. It seems more costly to try to do it myself than buy one. Am I missing something?
You can look at this two ways, 1. You can make a custom pit to your exact specs or 2. Buy one that is close enough. That is the difference in the cost. More on reddit.com

First Time Building A Stone Fire Pit… Did I Make A Mistake Here?
I did a lot of (youtube) research before building my own firepit a few years ago. The gravel/paver base underneath the firepit itself is usually for drainage, so your firepit doesn't become flooded after a heavy rain. It's not needed, but it is a nice convenience. People also like to bury pavers underneath around the outside of the pit to help with the "stiletto effect" of chairs sinking through the ground, but depending on your chairs and how they distribute weight, this may not be needed either. Finally, if you have not locked in your firepit with mortar, and are open to a little more work, I would recommend looking into turning it into a smokeless firepit. There are a ton of videos on it on YouTube(I personally learned a lot from both Haxman and Fix This Build That, both of who have a bunch of firepit videos and you can learn a ton from all their experiments with making them.) Reducing smoke blowing around into people's faces is a huge quality of life improvement for any firepit. More on reddit.com

Built a pretty sweet DIY backyard fire pit that's done really well at helping keep the smoke down and not blowing in people's faces. There's different ways you can get the right air-flow to get a *smokeless* effect. This is how I did it - hopefully some helpful tips/inspiration.

Here I’m replacing our old worn out fire pit with a new modern concrete one. We picked up the fire pit as a kit from a local concrete centre here in Southern Ontario. The kind of place that makes custom concrete pieces for the yard - think bird baths, statues, fireplaces etc.

They had different options like the round one we got as well as square and rectangle. It comes with the white bricks and the metal insert. The only other material we used was a layer of bricks at the bottom from the old fireplace. These were just basic garden edging bricks and you could substitute with another kind you might have around.

The cool thing is if you build these things right you can greatly eliminate smoke which makes it so much more enjoyable to sit around and the neighbours appreciate it too :) I talk about how this works near the end of the video.

Fire Pit Bricks
Go with the fire bricks. Use a stacked, circular pattern. When you stand next to it, they make a sort of parabolic heat reflector. It's crazy. Also, when stacking, you can leave gaps for added air-flow. More on reddit.com

Answer (1 of 5): I just installed a fire pit (Lowes). Before I went to the city to see if I need a permit for a pit to be used for burning wood only. The answer was no permit needed. I followed the pit’s instructions. There is a layer of concrete on the bottom and it is level.

r/DIY on Reddit: Interested in making a DIY gas firepit. It seems more costly to try to do it myself than buy one. Am I missing something?
July 10, 2024 -

So as the title states I'm doing research for a natural gas fire pit. I have a gas line for my pool heater near where I want to build the fire pit so I planned on extending this for the fire pit (my BIL is a plumber so he would help with gas piping). After looking into it, it seems way more expensive to build my own with landscape blocks, purchase a burner table, burner controls, burner than to just by one already assembled. Am I going about this wrong?

See links I am referencing:

52 landscape blocks for a 36" firepit

38" burner table

30" burner

I’m well over a thousand dollars and this isn’t even including the rocks to fill the pan, material for gas pipe, etc. Anyone have experience with this?

r/DIY on Reddit: First Time Building A Stone Fire Pit… Did I Make A Mistake Here?
May 29, 2025 -

I have a large area in my backyard where a 24’ above ground pool used to be and I got the idea to turn the area into a stone fire pit with a gravel seating area around it.

Over the weekend I got the stone fire pit built and it looks good to me. It feels very sturdy and I got it completely leveled. But, I was doing some reading on DIY fire pit areas because I am going to finish it this weekend when I realized that most people use gravel or paver base under the fire pit and build on top of that. I guess I should’ve researched more, but I only used sand and tampered that down level.

Now I’m second guessing myself and am wondering if this will be an issue down the road. I used landscape adhesive on all the stone blocks already too. Should I just keep moving forward and if it falls apart redo it then? I’ve attached some pics of the project so far.
