Buttons - You want shank buttons that you can cover in the same fabric as the headboard (they'll be completely covered so it doesn't matter what they look like). I bought ones about 35mm wide. It pays to shop around for these because they can get quite pricey - in the end I found a packet of 16 on Trademe for about $12. Before I started this project, my grandparents were getting rid of extra foam that they had on hand. It wasn't the perfect depth to make a padded headboard, but I decided to use it to save money. I doubled the foam, placing the egg carton shapes facing each other so that I didn't have any ridges in my simple headboard. Since making this DIY queen headboard, I have found some great options for cheap upholstery foam and did a blog post on it.

March 19, 2014 - I built the frame out of plywood, marked and drilled the holes, transferred the location of the holes to my foam (by marking through them with a sharpie), cut little triangles out of the foam around each hole so the fabric wouldn't bunch strangely, and then put it all together using a upholstery needle and some waxed thread to secure the button to the front and then had to blindly sort of stab through the foam to find the hole in the plywood.
