With the drawer only filling part of the space underneath the table, the channel just spanned from the front to the back for the drawers to slide in. I also used this approach in a drawer chest, shown at left. The drawers go right to the edge of the cabinet, so it was more expedient and space efficient to just attach pieces of hardwood to the inside sides of the cabinet. I just used pieces of scrap hardwood I had lying around, which is why the pieces of wood have odd shapes to them

February 14, 2025 - Full-extension metal slides allow you to build a drawer the full depth of the cabinet and still access its furthest reaches without removing it from the cabinet. To get that access using wood guides, you'll need to move the back of the drawer forward 2–4". When the back reaches the front of the cabinet it provides a visual cue that you've pulled out as far as you should.

December 3, 2020 - Rub a bar of soap (we used a basic Dove bar here) along the tracks on the bottom of the drawer and in the cabinet/dresser. Make sure to get anywhere wood rubs against wood and give it plenty of soap.

Drive a wood screw, securing the rail to the frame. Depending on the dresser configuration, you may need to screw the other end of the rail to the frame. Attach the other 2 rails and you're done!

After building those drawer boxes (double-check those right angles ), pop in drawer slides with some spare boards as supports, then smoothly slide in those boxes and attach.

The simplest was just extending the drawer bottom beyond the sides of the drawer, and them placing blocks along the sides to create grooves for the drawers to slide in. Everything can be done with a table saw, maybe even a circ saw.

October 11, 2017 - Two-way ball bearing slides large enough to accommodate my drawer (32 inches deep) would have cost well over $100. And again, they would have not met #3 above. My cost was around $25. In order to make this reasonably easy to build, I chose to make these slides from wood.

May 12, 2025 - Before I attached the sides, I cut a 1/2″ deep by 7/8″ wide dado in the box sides, then attached a 3/4″ square strip of material inside the cabinet. The drawers rest on these runners and with a coat of paste wax, slide very smoothly.
