Personally, I never really install support assists on systems. However, I do always install Dell command update or Dell update. Answer from bojack1437 on reddit.com

Dell supportassist good or bad???? - Windows 10 Support
It looks like I have two Dell Support Assist Apps on my Dell Inspiron desktop. Here are the screen shots. I'm thinking of uninstalling the older app, dated 12/3/2024. Any thoughts? Screenshot 2025-03-30 115855.png 5.92KB 0 downloads More on bleepingcomputer.com

Is Dell’s Support Assistant really necessary?
You answered your own question. Support Assist helps keep your Dell up to date on various Dell services. I did a bios update just today. It doesn't slow down your laptop. As far as renewing your warranty, that is a toss-up. You can still use most features of Dell SA without the warranty. SA gives a quick and easy way to clean up unneeded background files, too. Dell supportassist good or bad???? - Windows 10 Support
1 day ago - That removes all of the aggravation associated with these Dell programs and their overhead. SA also has a feature that consumes GBs of space for recovery purposes. It you have a robust disk imaging (backup) strategy, this feature is totally useless and a waste of SSD/HDD real estate. Just my two cents. Have a great day. ... So far I got rid of everything that had support assist from one computer.

No, you don’t really need it. Dell Support Assist usually helps monitor your system for hardware failures and it will report the same to Dell as well. So, as soon as you call Dell tech support - they have an option to see all the hardware scans and errors on your computer.

Difference between "Dell SupportAssist" and "Dell Update" for drivers update | DELL Technologies
August 23, 2022 - As I noted <here> in JohnnyRedShirt's thread, I personally don't like using SupportAssist and I just launch Dell Update once a week or so to check for available Dell software and driver updates for my Inspiron 5584. If I ever need to run a hardware scan I can still run Dell's F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) hardware diagnostics from my BIOS, and my Windows 10 OS also has its own built-in hardware diagnostics at Settings | Update & Security | Troubleshoot | Additional Troubleshooters.

SupportAssist is a free tool that Dell installs on PCs to help keep them up-to-date, but it isn't essential. You can always go to the Support page for your specific model and look for updated drivers etc, based on the version numbers (not the dates) when compared to the drivers currently installed on the system. Lots of users have been reporting issues with Dell's SupportAssist after some of the recent Microsoft updates. Dell has suggested uninstalling SupportAssist in Windows and then rebooting. Then download the latest version of SA and install the new one. Keep in mind that Dell doesn't support Win 10 on the Inspiron 2020 (Only Win 7, 64-bit)) so that might be part of the problem @Tinymorsel is having. But Win 10 is supported on the 3668 so try uninstalling/reinstalling the app and see if that helps.

Same issue with my 6 month old Inspiron i-3668. My PC gives the same (not responding) fault message (rest of Assist is basically grayed out, so you can only close the Support Assist App). My PC had been running ok, maybe a little slower than fresh out of the box, but still no real problems. Heck, I never even noticed the Support Assist Icon or even knew it existed until I got a Dell flyout window on the lower right corner about 10 days ago that read something about 'Dell Support Assist- Dell needs to update Support Drivers'. Well that message started the entire issue for me. My constant attempts to get Support Assist to work including even trying rebooting or shutting down my PC to see if that would get Support Assist to work. Today I even tried logging into my Dell Account and from the Dell.com Support menu I tried to run Support Assist directly from Dell itself and watched a bunch of videos. Well, finally got Support Assist started on Dell.com. Cleared Step #1 'Confirming Support Assist installed', then it went on to Step #2 'Gathering your device information', then proceeded to Step #3, but after about 5 minutes it froze up while running Step #3 'Running Your System Tests--and said please try again'. Just a frustrating loop created by Dell. Not sure if Support Assist is a 'free' service on ALL recent Window 10 PCs or if it is really just a way to get consumers to feel that they need to now pay to purchase a Dell Premium Support plan by calling the 'Dell Sales Department'. Does anyone know if this is actually a free support tool? Please post a reply. Thanks.

Based on your comment, I re-installed Dell Update and within a day got a notice to install a driver that is not even listed for my 5759's service tag although it is listed for generic 5759 systems (http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/inspiron-17-5759-laptop.html) which covers all variants of 5759's ever produced. SupportAssist says I am fully up to date. I contacted Dell support and had a very frustrating session with some guy who basically just wanted to close a ticket and get back to his nap.  Understandable given that they are 12 hours out synch with us. His points:   - don't install anything if you are not having problems (yet DELL tools and web site can state an update is recommended or urgent)   - don't install anything that Support Assist does not recommend (so why have DU?)   - keep DU because it installs drivers (so does SA including BIOS)   - keep DU because it installs drivers that are generic whereas SA does drivers that are specific to my configuration (nonsense - there are dozens of generic drivers that are not applicable to my system so why would DU want to download them and install them)   - don't install a driver if SA does not say you need it (apparently he does not read what he writes....)   - etc... more of the same ... DELL refuses to fix either SA or DU or resolve conflicts between the two or even to acknowledge that there are problems. I happened to notice I was missing a driver that the web site indicated was urgent post Win10-1803. Neither SA nor DU picked it up. When I first started buying Dell systems, I ignored the tools and checked the web site directly.  Then for a while DU was generally useful.  The SA came out and was ok.  Now both are questionable and buggy in many ways (installation conflicts, broken functionality (missing updates, incorrect wrt warranty status,...)) so I am going back to depending on checking the web site manually and using SA as a quick check in case it detects something I miss.  I am uninstalling DU - it seems to be dangerous.  At least SA will not install anything on its own as far I know. Dell tech support is a shadow of what it was a few years ago.  I discovered an issue with a couple of 5770's I was setting up for non-technical friends.  Others had hit it as well and it seems to apply to all 5770's but it took over a month for Dell to even acknowledge there was an issue (20-30 system event messages per second when using wifi) and I was then told by a tech support supervisor that since wifi was working that DELL did not care about the problem - he was blunt - if the boot up diagnostics don't fail then he did not want to talk to me.  I contacted a product manager in the US I had met through these forums a few years ago and he took over the issue and it is now being pursued by component manufacturers (either qualcomm or rivet networks I suspect).  This guy is great but he should not have had to get involved. Lenovo is looking increasingly appealing from a price perspective - no experience with their support - I had thinkpads in IBM days and tech supt was great.

I have 2 5759's for my wife and me and I am setting up 2 5770's for a couple of friends. As best I can tell, going forward Support Assist will do what had been done by combinations of:   - Support Assist Remediation   - Support Assist   - Dell Update Support Assist Remediation I believe was installed by a package called Dell Foundation Services which I believe also installed all the Data Vault Services. A year ago Dell changed Support Assist to displace Support Assist Remediation and Foundation Services the update failed to remove Support Assist Remediation.  That produces MSI Installer Event 1035 messages whenever these services run.   The best way forward: Remove Dell Support Assist, Dell Support Assist Remediation, and Dell Update.  Do a full shutdown (from a CMD: shutdown /f /t 0 ) - not just the power button. After the reboot, install Support Assist.  It is not clear that the new Dell Update is needed.  I have installed the latest Dell Update and it seems to do very little - notably it does not create a Dell Update Service as the old one did. Since it installed cleanly and left no debris, I have left it.  Don't forget to reset the credentials on the Support Assist service.   Your Windows Application Event log should be clean as far as MSI Installer 1035 events.  You may get a warning event from SupportAssist regarding an attempt to set something.  Does not seem to matter.  Support Assist seems to work ok.  My wife and I both have the same glitch that Support Assist reports our support as lapsed but the Dell website shows everything ok - Dell support is looking at it. Personally, I find Support Assist useful though it is fragile.  It has never **bleep** up driver updates or BIOS updates. Good luck

  1. Beware the term "optimization." It is used by software products in an effort to sell products that at best do nothing, and sometimes have disastrous results. No optimization is needed.
  2. I recommend avoiding the use of Dell SupportAssist
  3. Drivers should always be download from the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware the driver is for--not gotten anywhere else.
  4. Forget about that Dell SupportAssist does. None of it is needed.
  5. Yes. For example, download, install and run Firefox (my personal favorite browser). It will ask you to make it your default.

Good Day Ben_H1,

My name is Carlo, I am also using Windows 11 pc and community member like you.

1: Is optimization done automatically? If so, does this mean I do not have to run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?

Once you restart your computer it optimize the system, Disk cleanup you can do it every month or every 3 months to free up space, Defragmenter is not necessary.

2: I was told by Dell Technical Support that I should use Dell SupportAssist for optimizations, and to automate a hardware scan once a month, and a cleanup once a week. Is this recommended?

Yes, you can the Dell Support Assist app to check for updates especially drivers, not necesssary once a week.

3: I was also told I could automate driver updates in SupportAssist. Should I be doing these manually?

Yes you can use it to updates apps , you can also download the update manually by going to your computer manufacturers website , locate your device model and check if there are updates available to install.

4: Is it possible to do what SupportAssist does with Windows tools?

Windows updates also installing the drivers that was release by your manufacturer, same thing as the driver from your manufacturers website.

5: Is it possible to set up a default browser without assigning the browser to each file type?

Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > select the browser you want to set as default > Click “Set Default"

I hope the information above helps.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Carlo T.
