If it's just for installing OEM-released drivers, I think both Dell Update and SupportAssist will do the trick. But Dell customer service will almost always recommend SupportAssist. According to my experience, SA takes up more space and RAM than Dell Update, and the probability of SA crashing is higher than Dell Update. On my device, SA keeps crashing, especially when multiple tasks are running at the same time, whereas Dell Update never crashes.

Is Dell’s Support Assistant really necessary?

I am using Dell Inspiron 15. Recently the Support Assistant is telling me to renew the service contract. It says you have only 44 days left. It takes me to a website and tells to me fill up some info, which I have already done a few days ago. And nothing happens. Besides the support assistant is too much slow on my laptop. It feels useless but sometimes Idk I get some updates from here that’s why I have kept it.
Just uninstall it. You do not need it.
Just more bloatware DELL and HP puts on PC's
You can uninstall Support Assist on both computers. You don't need it and it can cause problems. If you ever want to use it in the future, Dell Downloads and Drivers will reinstall it to scan your computer or you can install it manually. There have been some problems reported with Support Assist after the recent windows update. I'd wait awhile until the problems are fixed.

- Beware the term "optimization." It is used by software products in an effort to sell products that at best do nothing, and sometimes have disastrous results. No optimization is needed.
- I recommend avoiding the use of Dell SupportAssist
- Drivers should always be download from the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware the driver is for--not gotten anywhere else.
- Forget about that Dell SupportAssist does. None of it is needed.
- Yes. For example, download, install and run Firefox (my personal favorite browser). It will ask you to make it your default.
Good Day Ben_H1,

1: Is optimization done automatically? If so, does this mean I do not have to run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?
Once you restart your computer it optimize the system, Disk cleanup you can do it every month or every 3 months to free up space, Defragmenter is not necessary.
2: I was told by Dell Technical Support that I should use Dell SupportAssist for optimizations, and to automate a hardware scan once a month, and a cleanup once a week. Is this recommended?
Yes, you can the Dell Support Assist app to check for updates especially drivers, not necesssary once a week.
3: I was also told I could automate driver updates in SupportAssist. Should I be doing these manually?
Yes you can use it to updates apps , you can also download the update manually by going to your computer manufacturers website , locate your device model and check if there are updates available to install.
