Google Docs
office application suite from Google
Google Docs is an online word processor and part of the free, web-based Google Docs Editors suite offered by Google, accessible via a web browser as a web application and available as a mobile app on Android and iOS, as well as a desktop application on ChromeOS. It allows users to create, edit, and collaborate on documents in real time, with edits tracked by the user making them and a revision history preserving changes. The service supports collaboration with real-time editing, where each editor’s position is highlighted with a unique color and cursor, and features like "Suggested edits" and "Action items" enable task assignment and discussion. Google Docs supports opening and saving documents in various formats, including Microsoft Word, OpenDocument, PDF, EPUB, and Markdown. It originated from Writely, a web-based word processor launched in August 2005, which Google acquired in March 2006, leading to the launch of Google Docs on October 10, 2006. Over time, Google has introduced AI-powered features such as "Explore" for research, grammar suggestions, and integration with Gemini for content drafting and editing, especially for Google Workspace subscribers. The app is available on Android, iOS, and desktop platforms, with offline editing capabilities on mobile devices and ChromeOS. Google Docs is part of Google Workspace, offering additional business-focused features for paid subscribers, including advanced AI tools and enhanced collaboration features.
