In the musical, Glinda doesn’t have any innate magic abilities the same way Elphie does. In the book, she is actually the one who casts the spell on Nessa’s shoes to help her walk. But in the book she’s actually quite terrible at magic, there’s a scene where she exploded a sandwich. The bubble that she uses is actually not magic at all, but rather a mechanical trick made by the Wizard. In the musical however, Glinda is never referred to as a witch, just Glinda the Good. But in the wizard of oz the title witch gets accredited to Glinda, Nessa, and Elphaba. The title “witch” goes beyond having magical powers; it reflects political influence, public perception, and symbolic roles in the land of Oz. This broad use of the title contributes to the narrative’s exploration of good versus evil, authority, and reputation. Answer from Wonderful-Peach7731 on reddit.com

r/wicked on Reddit: How does Glinda get her powers?
October 21, 2024 -

I saw the movie last night and was blown away. I didn't go in with high expectations because I saw the musical and for some reason was not a fan so I don't remember every detail. I see the Glinda doesn't have natural powers so how does she get them in the play? What makes her a witch?

The actual reason Glinda can suddenly do magic in the ending of Wicked: For Good, spelled out
November 21, 2025 - Plus, things have definitely stopped being “kind of easy” for Glinda. She’s experienced actual hardship. Glinda has way, way more anger about the state of the world than she did at Shiz University. These stronger emotions boost her ability, like they did for Elphaba. So, there you go. There is a proper reason why Glinda can suddenly do magic at the ending of Wicked: For Good. I’m sure it doesn’t just happen because Ariana Grande wanted a magic wand x

Can Glinda do Magic?
At least in the book, Glinda can do magic, but she’s terrible at it (she explodes a sandwich at some point )😂 in the book Elphaba can’t do magic (edit: I seemed to have forgotten that she does do some magic - she just doesn’t use it often) at all - in fact, she’s a life sciences major at shiz! Even with the Grimmerie, she isn’t able to do spells. In the musical, Elphaba is the one with the magical abilities. More on reddit.com

2 weeks ago - Dillamond's death, she realizes there are much more important things to worry about besides boys and popularity, however, while originally challenged to become a forward thinker and activist for change, she quickly falls back into her old ways of high society ignorance, and although she is a powerful sorceress, she does not use her abilities to make change. Does Glinda Have Powers & Did She Realize Boq Is the Tin Man? Her Wicked: For Good Ending Explained by Director - ComicBook.com
1 month ago - But now that Glinda has to help make a better Oz – one without the wizard, without Morrible, and without the Wicked Witch – while also learning (and doing) what it truly takes to be good, it’d make sense for her to finally need powers, so long as she uses them the right way. As Chu says: “Glinda chooses a reality that she may never be good. I think it’s this idea that we’re both good and wicked. We’re all of these things, and every day we make a choice about which one we’re going to be.” ... As for the Tin Man, it certainly does seem like Glinda realizes who it really is.

Why Glinda Can’t Do Magic In Wicked
November 24, 2024 - Glinda's parents are affluent citizens of Gilliken Country, but they are both from Oz, meaning that Glinda does not have the magic that comes from being a child of both worlds. Elphaba not only has innate magical powers, but is able to channel them through the strength of her emotions.
