r/wicked on Reddit: Nessarose’s power
September 11, 2025 -

From my perspective I don’t feel like anyone has truly acknowledged nessas magical abilities. She literally casually reads the grimmerie and is able to cast a spell first try. I always wondered how she was able to do that. I mean I could say it’s cause elphaba is able to that it must be in their genes or Something. Or that because both her Elphaba had unique births caused by outside influences. I’d love to hear other people’s perspectives on this.

The show is just extremely vague on the magic system and how magic relates to each of the characters, I've written a whole thing about it on tumblr. Elphaba reading the grimmerie while the wizard can't is used to show that she's a real sorcerer while he isn't... Ok, so why is Madam Morrible said to only be able to read a spell or two? If Elphaba's power was due to "being a child of two worlds" while Nessa isn't, as she's the governor's biological daughter, how could she read it? If we go by the idea that she doesn't have magic though, doesn't that mean anyone could read the grimmerie, including the wizard? It's said that she's reading it backwards so that's why the spell goes wrong... But still doesn't that have to mean either everyone can do that or Nessa has innate magic as well? I dont think it's even clear if "knowing how to read it" means being able to use it at all, or just actually understanding the words. Elphaba saying Glinda "has to learn" points to the latter, but if she just started pronouncing the words randomly what would happen? lol who knows. It's not even made clear in the first place if everyone in this world can learn to do magic or not. I'm leaning towards yes, but it's hard to know if Morrible saying she thinks Glinda "doesn't have what it takes" means that she just thinks she can't learn or that she'll never be able to do it due to not having innate magical power.

I think the seed that's been planted regarding magic in Oz is that a person's magical ability is triggered by losing someone. So maybe and this is just a theory - but Elphaba loses her father when he basically disowns and dehumanizes her which triggers that outburst. So maybe Nessa's magical abilities were triggered by watching her father literally die. And maybe Glinda's magical abilities will be triggered because she loses Elphaba. It also ties into the whole theme of metamorphosis - the motif of butterflies with Glinda so maybe something like grief triggers inherent magic. Or even Pleasantville where a harsh truth opens up and the world becomes colourful.

Is the bubble actually a bubble or some form of "stage magic" by the wizard? In the German revival, it seems they lean towards the latter. More on reddit.com

nessarose being the real villain
One of the reasons I love the title “Wicked” is because it applies to several characters who all become wicked in different ways. Unrelated, but: I really hope they put the Wicked Witch of the East in the part two soundtrack!! More on reddit.com

Does Elphaba's Sister Nessarose Have Magic Powers In Wicked Too?
November 29, 2024 - Nessarose is embarrassed by these moments, blaming Elphaba for being unable to control her powers. She doesn’t seem to understand that Elphaba doesn’t want to be different from her peers and never asks for magical powers. Additionally, the younger Thropp sister isn’t ever shown experiencing anything like this herself. ... Wicked and Emilia Perez are both musicals that have a shot at winning Best Picture.

Wicked Witch of the East - Wikipedia
2 days ago - The Wicked Witch was a middle-aged, malevolent woman who conquered and tyrannized the Munchkin Country in Oz's eastern quadrant, forcing the native Munchkins to slave for her night and day. Her charmed Silver Shoes (changed to ruby slippers in the 1939 film musical) held many mysterious powers and were her precious possession.

How in the Name of Oz Does 'Wicked's Nessarose Become the Wicked Witch of the East?
December 15, 2024 - Although The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) have already turned into the bad guys in the first film, Nessarose will also become another villain. She loses her humanity because of her need for love (and her fear of being alone), and she uses her power to subjugate the citizens of Munchkinland.

February 20, 2022 -

In the musical, Madame Morrible says that her magical specialty is the weather, which she uses to conjure the cyclone that dropped Dorothy's house on top of Nessarose. I'm guessing every witch has a magical talent of their own, even if it's not specified in the musical. Elphaba's talent would seem to be transformation. Her first spell gave the Wizard's Monkey servants wings, and she would later transform Fiyero and Boq into the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman respectively. Glinda's talent seems to be transportation. She travels around Oz in a magical bubble, and she has to be the one who sends Dorothy home at the end, since Elphaba only enchanted Nessarose's shoes to allow her sister to walk.

Nessarose in Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Character Analysis | Shmoop
Nessarose's decision to embrace religion so fully is probably related to two other key factors of her character: her lack of arms and her relationship with Frex. First off, Nessa's lack of arms has made her life really difficult. This may be in part why she became extremely religious. She was never able to be independent, and when she gained independence later in life, with the help of Glinda's shoe-enhancing spell, the power ...

Why Do Fans Think Nessarose Could Be Wicked Part Two's Big Villain?
November 28, 2024 - Now we know that truly evil Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) has power over the weather (Tornadoes) and that the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) is a fraud, but how does Wicked set up the notion that Wicked Witch of the East is Nessarose—and that her shoes are mostly power-less for now? The hints are in how Nessarose treats Elphaba throughout the film. As TikTok commentator (like @aspoonfulofchae below) have comedically pointed out, “I’m on the side of the house, the house did nothing wrong,” reading Nessa for filth in her hot take.
