I don’t think this is technically recommended but I have done this in my own house and done this cheat a few times with zero issues… the urethane bonds incredibly well, so I can guarantee that it will stick just fine and you won’t have any peeling in the upcoming years. Urethane however doesn’t stop anything from bleeding through so you could do an entire first coat in urethane, then spot prime any yellowing with shellac or extreme bond oil. I'm sanding an antique chest of drawers to be converted into our daughter's changing table. I've sanded using 80 grit and am about to sand using 150. I've selected SW Emerald Urethane semigloss but I'm curious if I need to prime the furniture before the first coat of urethane paint?

Preprite pro block or extreme bond primer. PRIME FIRST please for the love of god dont skip priming or your paint will chip off. Emerald doesnt adhere to substrates without primer it will fail. Sand, prime, fill, sand, paint, sand again and paint again.

what kind of wood are the cabinets? this answer usually makes the primer choice easier. but usually just need either a bonding primer (extreme bond) or a wood primer (premium wall and wood, multi-purpose). but if the cabinets are oak or another tannin bleeding type of wood, then I would go with either oil or a wastebased blocker like extreme block (comes in oil and wb) or 123 could work if it says it adheres to wood... I don't remember if it does. also, the cure time on emerald urethane has greatly improved with the newer version. More on reddit.com

On the SW website, Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is promoted as an “Interior/exterior waterbased urethane modified alkyd with the look and feel of an alkyd/oil finish.” My question is whether this product is a paint and primer. Other Emerald paints state that they are, yet I can’t find primer info on Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel specifically.
It’ll be used to re-paint over oil-based paint on trim and baseboards.
I usually wash, sand, and prime. The contractor only wants to scuff sand, and they already started cutting corners by not scuffing. Also, they prefer the paint brand with a woodland animal on it from a home improvement store.

Paint and primer in one is just a wall paint that hides existing colors well, it’s not for surface prep of any other kind. It’s a marketing term. That said, priming never hurts, but you should be fine with a scuff sand and two coats of Emerald Urethane.

Its build is thin to modest, at best...and will expose a 150 grit "scratch" on certain substrates....So I absolutely love the rich finish but have to apply 2 coats BIN, apply a heavy coat of Premium W&W which builds depth bigtime, and then I spray two coats of the Urethane. If you spray this over 2 coats of Bin only, the finish appearance is inferior to that of 2 coats of bin plus Premium W&W. Furthermore, I have sprayed some other vendors water based primers that I know are good in place of Premium W&W and it doesn't look as sexy.
