What type of mattress should be chosen to avoid back pain and improve sleep quality? Review of the literature - PMC
The mattress had the following characteristics: medium-firm surface based on these components: foam-encased Bonnell spring unit, densified fibre pad, super-soft foam, damask cover, semi-flex foundation, slick fibred; they had the same size as mattresses previously used by volunteers. Results revealed significant improvement for all parameters previously indicated [14]. At the end of the experimental phase at day 28, a back pain decrease of approximately 48% and an improvement of sleep quality of 55% were reported; such improvement correlated with a significant decrease in stress levels.

Unsure how to tell if my mattress is the source of my daily back pain.
If I sleep on that to see how it affects my back, is there a good time period where I can definitely say whether or not my back pain is from our Helix? I would just sleep overnight. It's hard to tell until you actually go into full relaxation mode and your muscles relax. Try sleeping on some blankets on a carpeted floor too. Side note: Seen doctors for x-rays and 2 MRIs for a pinched nerve in L4/L5 and was assured everything looked completely normal everywhere else. Any info is much appreciated. I have some issues in the lumbar spine, and it appears to be due to the common sitting all day disease where my psoas and iliacus are tight, and my glutes are slack. I'm working on strengthening those If you have issues with your back, the mattress isn't going to solve them, it's exercise, stretching, and daily habits. More on reddit.com

Spring Better Support Then Foam?
I had a similar thing happen. Slept at a hotel with an old crappy spring mattress and felt better then my 4 year old crappy $239 Amazon Basics memory foam mattress. I'm switching to the WinkBed hybrid instead of Sedona Elite since it is a little cheaper. More on reddit.com

Box spring causing back pain??
I just swapped out my mattress, box spring, and added additional support to the frame just to cover all my bases. Hoping that helps my ongoing back pain once I get acclimated to the new mattress. Box springs definitely wear down. Have you tried just the mattress on the floor? More on reddit.com

What is the best mattress type for back pain?
There’s no one best mattress type for back pain, but generally mattresses that provide a combination of pressure relief and support are ideal. This makes hybrids and latex hybrids good, since these beds tend to offer a close conforming comfort layer that relieves pressure, while at the same time having a study coil support core underneath. I would avoid soft all-foam beds or overly firm innerspring beds.

Can a mattress topper help with back pain
In some ways, a mattress topper can help with back pain, particularly by adding pressure relief to the surface of the bed. A close conforming foam or latex mattress topper can relieve pressure on your body, easing pain. That being said, most pain caused by mattresses result in poor support and spinal alignment, which a topper isn’t going to fix.

Back Pain From My Mattress?
Consistently waking up with back pain is a sure sign that your mattress isn’t giving your back the support it needs. This is especially likely if you’ve changed your sleeping position or pillow but still feel pain in the mornings. Saggy or lumpy mattresses are more likely to cause back pain as they can’t give as much support as they’re expired.
