Hi, I'm a admitted student into LAS next coming school year. For context, I didn't submit either the FAFSA or the CSS, but I wanted to make sure the reason I didn't get any scholarships. I maintained a straight 4.0 gpa, was top 5 in my class, and was part of NHS. I didn't submit my FAFSA because I am not low-income, but I just found out that several classmates of mine in my similar shoes received scholarships. Is this because I didn't submit the CSS? Or are scholarships just given out to random qualified applicants but not all (I'm instate if that clarifies anything)?

Why would you not submit FAFSA. They need you FAFSA. I am not sure why you would not submit it in the first place it is free and takes like 15 minutes. https://osfa.illinois.edu/process/

you have to submit a fafsa in order to receive any financial aid at all. whether it be scholarships, loans, grants etc. (i work in the fin aid office) the fafsa closes at the end of the school year, however, i would fill it out asap if you want to be considered. unfortunately, you’re pretty late to the game so it’s not likely you will be awarded anything grant/ scholarship wise if you are not need-based, especially this semester. the school is only allotted so much money to give out to students, and it runs out quick. additionally, uiuc doesn’t give out many scholarships at all. with all this being said, it would be in your best interest to fill out the fafsa bc A. it takes like 5 mins and B. can not harm you to fill it out. worst thing is they don’t give you anything and C. you could get awarded! good luck!

I had a similar question (I'm not particularly keen on paying money to send out CSS to schools Im applying for merit scholarships at because that seems like a waste of money for non need-based aid.) Wondered if FAFSA and CSS were required for any aid (including merit based) so I just emailed each admissions office. Each college may have a different policy so Id suggest just emailing them individually. More on reddit.com

I think it costs like $25 for the first school then $16 for each school after that. Most of the big privates require it for financial aid so your Haryard, Yale, Stanford, etc. But not big publics like UMich, Georgia Tech, or UIUC. Check the school’s website for information regarding each particular school. I am pretty sure that it cannot be waived for internationals. More on reddit.com

UC’s only use FAFSA not the CSS. If you are not a US citizen, then you are not eligible for the FAFSA. UC’s offer no financial aid to Out of State or International applicants. More on reddit.com

PSA, public universities tend to offer little to no need-based financial aid to out-of-state students and charge them more. OOS students pay 65-70k per year to attend UCs, no need-based aid. Run the Net Price Calculator on the financial aid website of each college you are interested in, with the help of a parent, to see a need-based financial aid estimate before you apply.
