r/Seattle on Reddit: Question about DOL Abstract Driving Record.
October 26, 2024 -

Hi, y'all! Quick question, hoping someone with a bit more knowledge can enlighten me.

Long story short: I'm applying to be a driving instructor and want to check my driving record to see if I qualify. I do have moving violation through a school zone (I think almost 2 years ago; camera issued) and a parking citation (maybe 2 years ago, officer issued).

I bought a "Full" parking Abstract from DOL, but there wasn't even a section for citations/moving violations. So, I'm wondering if I bought the wrong type of abstract (there are four, and one of them being "Employment") or if the citations aren't on there because it was a) camera issued, which I just read online doesn't go on your record.. thoughts and b) was issued by an officer but was a minor infraction

r/Washington on Reddit: Do I print driving record to get WA Driver’s License?
August 27, 2021 -

I’m moving from CA to Washington with my husband for his job. I’m looking at the dmv requirements for drivers licenses and it says that I don’t need to take a test if I have a valid license from another state (driving record dated within the last 30 days). Do I need to print the driving record and take it to the DMV? Is it fine to just pull it up from the CA DMV website? I want to prepare ahead of time.

r/DMV on Reddit: What the heck is on my driving record?
July 3, 2022 -

I'm trying to get a CDL driving job, so I pulled my driving record last week. On the record, it appears that I have a citation from 2009 in the state of OR (14 years ago). I have never lived or been licensed in the state of OR. As a matter of fact, I was living in MA in 2009 at the date of the citation.

The report says. Description: failed to answer citation. Action taken: AAMVA suspended. Indefinite. It also has a violation # that I'm not going to include on Redit.

I currently live in WA and pulled the driving record from WA. So I called the WA DMV. The guy I talked to says it's probably an unpaid ticket. I asked him what the ticket was for and what the implications of an AAMVA suspension were. I asked if I was legal to drive in OR, if I could be arrested for this, and if it would affect me getting a CDL driving job. He honestly couldn't give me a whole lot of information and told me to call the OR DMV.

I called the OR DMV. The lady who I spoke to searched my Name, DOB, and SS #. She said OR has nothing on record under my name. She basically told me that I can request a driving record from OR. They will send me what's called a failure to locate document (basically saying that I don't have a driving record in OR. She searched, I don't). Then I can bring it to the WA DMV, and that should remove it from my record.

So, ultimately, it seems like a bunk charge and not a big deal. I should be able to have it removed with no problem. I'm just curious how this even happens?

To answer your question in very general terms, it happens because you, or someone with your name and/or a similar name or date of birth was cited in Oregon and Oregon placed a hold on that person's driving privileges. This happens across the country, and is frequent due to the reporting done via the nationwide National Driver Registry and Problem Driver Pointer System. The idea behind the NDR/PDPS is to prevent someone with some sort of hold on their driving privilege from being able to be issued or renewing their privileges in any state until they clear up the state(s) listing the hold. In simple terms, it is supposed to prevent someone with an out of state license from blowing off driving citations not received in their home state, and prevents them from getting tickets in their home state, and moving to a new state and being issued whilst ignoring any tickets from their old state. In your case, you may wish to contact WA DOL (again) and ask them what the customer number (license number) they are showing that OR lists the hold for. I don't want to make this post too long, but OR can't see the holds they put in the PDPS system (they can see them if they can find you by your name, or by your license / customer number). So, if Oregon said they couldn't find you in their system by your name, I'd get the customer number that WA is saying OR has reported as having a hold. It could be that you're in the system, but there is a minor typo in your name and that's why they couldn't locate the record that way. Once you get the number from WA and contact OR DMV with that record number, then they can pull up the information. OR DMV will be able to tell you the date of the offense, the name of the court that filed the failure to appear, and the docket number (the docket number is what will allow the court to find the case in their system, and tell you what you need to do to clear it up). The court can probably also give you more details on the when/where/what the original charge was, which may either jog your memory to say 'oh, crap, yeah, I remember that', or 'no, that wasn't me, I was living in MA at the time and had never ever even been to Oregon on the date of the citation, and I have proof to back up that I'm not the person the court is looking for'. If it was you, then you'll likely pay the court their fines, they will give you a docket clearance (and/or send it to Oregon DMV), then you'll pay the $75 reinstatement fee to Oregon DMV, and Oregon will remove that hold they have in the national system, which will allow you to carry on, worry-free. Within a day or two of you getting (your 'driving privilege', even though you don't have a license there) reinstated in Oregon, WA DOL should be able to pull you up in their system and verify that the hold from OR is no longer showing in PDPS. If it wasn't you, and you can prove it, then ask Oregon DMV about a letter you can obtain from them to prove that it wasn't you. Sometimes the national system will have multiple people with your name (or very close) and same birthday, and when WA DOL pulls you up, it appears you have this hit in Oregon when it might not be you after all. Oregon may be able to say 'our is 6'3" and weighs 315 lbs with brown hair, which clearly isn't ' and then you can present that (keeping a copy for yourself) to WA DOL so that they can remove the offense from your record and/or put a note in their file that 'the person with the hold from OR with license # xxx isn't the same person as '. The reason you're keeping the letter, or a copy of it, is so that if this comes up in the future, you won't have to do this all over again. Again, this whole section only applies if it wasn't you who got the ticket in Oregon, and you can prove it (simply holding an out of state license at the time is not sufficient proof, fwiw). As to what would happen if you got pulled over in Oregon? That depends, and sometimes comes down to the officer. Some may say 'hey, just so you know, you have a suspension showing out of Oregon, you may want to get that cleared up, have a nice day' and others may say 'you're suspended out of Oregon, I'm impounding your car and citing you for driving while suspended '. I don't mean to panic you (as the odds of you getting stopped are likely very low), but you may want to work on clearing that hold (by either reinstating in OR, if you, or getting some documentation that says 'Not this person') asap. Good luck, I hope everything goes fairly smoothly for you!

Additional information: I pulled my driving record back in 2014. I unfortunately do not still have a copy of it. The AAMVA suspension was not on my record in 2014. This is odd because the date of the citation is from 2009.
