Does anyone know where in Canada can I buy an authentic Shikibuton (Japanese futon) and tatami mat? Amazon sells knock offs, and all the companies in the US do not seem to ship to Canada. :(

Here is where I ordered a set. I hope it’s legit! I ordered from here and love what I got! I’ve read the reviews and did my research and felt the website was honest. However, I live in America so being able to get anything that’s Japanese authentic can be kind of hard if you don’t know where to look.

If you don’t find a better option — myUS.com provides a US address that you have stuff shipped to, and then forwards it on. It increases the cost but sometimes there’s no other way :-(

A) King size shikibuton ?

Q: Was it cumbersome to roll up and store away or for airing it out / cleaning ?

B) 2 Twin XL size shikibutons to form a King ?

Q: Was the seam between the two futons noticeable or uncomfortable when sleeping with a
partner ?

For Either: Would you purchase this again ? Or what would you recommend ? 3" or 4" thickness ?

A little background:

I (31M) just moved into a new 1 bedroom apartment. I have moved many times and have come to despise mattresses due to their bulkyness, cost, and difficulty with reselling or disposing of them. I'm living alone but have a partner that lives separately in her own apartment and would like us to be comfortable when she stays the night.

TL:DR:

Seems like 2 twin XLs would be great for its modularity, but Im worried that the seam between the two futons would be uncomfortable. A king sized would be great and comfy, but I'm concerned that it will be difficult to roll / fold away, or hard to clean.

As someone who recently moved into a temporary space, I went with two twin mattresses for the storage capability. I sleep on them stacked (so it’s super cushy). Mine don’t have obvious edges (to the touch), and I have a separate duvet to cover them when they are laid side to side. We barely notice the edges while “active” on the king configuration.

I have a king and wish we had gone with two twins. It’s nearly impossible for me to move on my own, I need my husbands help. It’s also hard to find a place to lift it to air out, because it’s so large and awkward. The way that ours is designed (cotton with wool fill from the futon shop), the seams are flat, flush against the edge. I don’t think there would be any issue with pushing two together.

There's stuff on Amazon but I'd prefer to find somewhere local that I can go to and see the size and firmness of it.

I sleep on a Japanese futon setup. I would avoid the Amazon emoor stuff, it’s made from polyester and non natural fibres. I got my shikifuton from Futon D’or, made in Canada (Quebec) from natural fibres. Filling is cotton and eucalyptus fibres. I’m happy with it, it’s well made and was less expensive than other options. It is very firm, especially once it gets bedded in. I have it on top of Tatami mats. I like it, but it’s not for everyone. Most affordable way to get a firm sleeping surface. For what it's worth I got the Emor(sp?) one from Amazon.ca and it shipped from Japan and got hit pretty hard with DHL duties. It's very firm as you're basically sleeping on the ground, even with plush carpeting. You're also supposed to flip and air it out often, I got it as a rollable guest bed.

I will be moving to a new place next month and instead of buying a bed and mattress I’m interested in purchasing a Japanese futon (I’m trying to live a minimalist lifestyle so this would fit perfectly with what I’m looking for).

Can I have any recommendations of store that have them in Vancouver? I’m open to online stores that ship here as well

If you find something let me know! I've been looking for one recently as well. Futon d'or out of Quebec ships and looks good but I'm hesitant to buy without looking. If you're looking to get tatami mats as well they'll cost quite a bit more than the mattress.
