Drawer bottom material? | Sawmill Creek Woodworking Community
April 26, 2010 - The only reason our ancestors used solid wood for drawer bottoms was that they didn't have plywood or MDF. Many people line their kitchen drawer bottoms so really nice plywood (special hardwood) may be a waste. I'd use birch plywood. I've also used melamine faced MDF with very good success.

Drawer Bottom Construction Material
From contributor Y: I use 1/2 pre-finished ply with a butt joint ply drawer and undermount slides. The front and back are 1" shorter than the sides so that the bottom is 1/2" short from the front to the back. This way I do not have to notch for track and I pocket hole the sides of the bottom ...

Two ways to add strength, if you're wanting to store your collection of priceless vintage anvils in there, are (a) glue the bottom in the dado, and (2) double the material by gluing a second piece on the bottom. No need to enlarge the dado, just cut it to fit and glue it in after the drawer is assembled. You could invert the drawer and clamp the sistered piece by placing oh, say, an anvil on it. Kindly, Lee ... If you ever come across a piece of plywood that is actually 1/4", frame it, cause it's rare.

Best way to attach drawer bottoms: destructive test
I actually used some painted scrap plywood. I scraped the paint on either edge and glued a strip of maple on. Maple is harder and slides better than spruce. That way I get a harder sliding surface and still get to glue the drawer bottoms flat on the bottom.

You'd need to cut the plywood to the exact size of the interior of the drawer, the affix the plywood to the original bottom. VHB tape would work well for this. If you use this plywood, you'll have cedar lined drawers!

October 5, 2020 - Wots the best /cheapest sheet material to use to replace the bottom.s of drawers and the back of a wardrobe ? Thanks in advance ... For drawers, I would go for ply, as thick as the existing material. For wardrobe, hardboard is cheap. Next in order is thin MDF or Ply.

Plywood has a bit more give to absorb that sort of load. For kitchen drawers, 1/4" melamine with Masonite or MDF core is probably fine. Loads aren't as high as shop drawers, usually. ... It looks like most use BB ply, A lot of 1/2" in there too. I may have to revisit what I use...

Drawer Bottom Thickness - FineWoodworking
June 1, 2007 - In your case, you're building fairly large drawers. That being said, 1/4-in.-thick plywood should suffice. Although they may bow a bit in the middle when loaded, the bottoms will hold the contents securely and wear fine over the years, especially if it's multi-ply plywood, such as Baltic birch.

Secrets for Better Drawers | Woodsmith
November 24, 2016 - This was the case when I added some drawer storage under my workbench. The drawers are 36" wide and 20" deep. And I wanted to store hand planes, routers, and jigs in them. So I chose to move up to 1⁄2" plywood for added strength. You can also glue another layer onto the existing bottom to add stiffness.

I’m sure there will be other, better suggestions than mine, but just in case I’ll still leave a suggestion. You can add a brace underneath the board. Fit that board back into its slot, cut a piece of wood that runs from front to back and fit it underneath the drawer. Pinning it in with a pinner would be easiest, nailing it in would be fine, screws would be good too. If you nail or screw it in you’ll want to predrill the holes so you don’t crack the wood.
