What type of perennial would work for this driveway?
That’s a very narrow strip and it’s literally an nth away from grass. You might be better off letting the grass fill it in. Many of the other suggestions sound fine, but wont be in the long run. Don’t even bother with shrubs, of any kind, they require too much maintenance for such a limited space and the grass is gonna be a water hog. Besides, shrubbery spreads and it’ll be in your driveway and your lawn. That roll on your lawn is already an issue for mowing….why make it worse? Don’t get too intense with multiple types of plants; something always dies, leaving an unsightly hole. Anything creeping, such as a Thyme would be well suited for this and uniformity is easy. If you want color check into things such as Delosperma, a lovely succulent ground cover which may have near nausea inducing flower colors; i love the shit! Check out the rock garden sections of good nurseries. This situation would be ideal for rock garden and alpine plants. More on reddit.com
Aligned or staggered with driveway and fence?
Hi! I drew a plan for you in the same scale that addresses the concerns a couple commenters have already made: Green Giant at current placement may block views, and staggering plants makes good places for understory shade plants and spring ephemerals. This plan also does a few things I think you would like: A welcoming entrance that will embrace you. The white of a flowering tree always shows up best against a green background. One Dogwood at the entrance gives people an idea of what will be coming and teases good things to come. Nannyberry Viburnums are WONDERFUL homes for nesting birds and spacing them out will give them some room to do so less competitively. The second grouping of Dogwoods and Nannyberry plants is a gentle repetition of a theme which is beautiful for you (white tree against Green Giant) every time you leave, and again leaves space for nesting birds, while also addressing your concerns about "staggering vs natural" plant placement. The U shape of the planting gives the illusion of more depth of the space while allowing again for some shorter part sun perennials in front if desired. Oaks are ALWAYS a good idea! Happy Planting! November 21, 2021 - Lay 2 rows of slabs on sand and put extra sand between slabs and finish with a thin layer of gravel. Throw seeds of various rock plants on the sand and let be. The only problem is that you have to drive square onto the slabs otherwise they will move as you will see in a lot of drives.

I have this super long windy driveway. I was thinking of doing the “showy” mix of flowers from prairie moon all long it. Or possible hop hornbeams. What would look nicer? I haven’t considered shrubs either. I would love some ideas!

I'd plant a mini woodland tree/shrub grouping that crosses the winding driveway rather than plant a row of shrubs along side this. If I ended up wanting to lose more lawn I could remove sod and plant more or transition into a meadow. Place at the curve being good and sure to keep plants close to the road short enough that you can see what's ahead. Lining it with a flower bed or shrubbery seems too formal a set up for this beautiful space.

I am planning on planting some perennials in the small strip of dirt/mulch next to our driveway (between the lawn and the driveway). I was thinking about planting one perennial between each pair of rocks. Ideally something that doesn’t grow too tall and adds some color. Would you have any recommendations on what would work? Thanks!
