I have a Vitamix blender, Cuisineart Spice and nut grinder (designed for dry stuff) , Braun Handheld blender stick, and a Kitchen aid food processor.
I see some indian recipes use a 'wet' grinder or mixer grinder. My question is what is the difference between 'wet' grinder or mixer grinder in the context of Indian cooking? Do I need another device? It seems to me that my Vitamix blender would do fine for the wet ingredients (vitamix have fairly blunt blades so its more like grinder), but I'd just have to do larger batches.

In India they use mixies , which are basically a food processor/blender that comes with normally at least 3 different bowl sizes. From what you have you could use the Cuisinart for small amounts (I use something similar like this that comes with a 2 blade and 4 blade container) and the vitamix for large amounts. There really isn't a difference between dry and wet spice grinders, and the cuisinart metal container means it wont get stained by spices (like chili or turmeric) which can happen with plastic ones, and it is easy to rinse out and dry.

Basically a wet grinder extracts the oils out of the spice, making a "wet" paste. A great example of this paste is chocolate. You don't need a wet grinder to make something like indian curry paste for example, you can add the oil yourself to the dry ingredients and mix together. Not to mention that a lot of indian and asian recipes in general call for frying the spices before adding the main components of the dish, so even that isn't a must do step.
