Dust Collectors
January 15, 2025 - Woodworkers often think of adding a dust collector only after purchasing their shop's essential machinery. But we encourage you to consider new or upgraded dust collection now, regardless of your current tool lineup. Hooking up your dust- and chip-making machines to a collector reduces your time spent cleaning, as well as—hopefully—the amount of fine dust that lingers in the air before eventually settling. A fully ducted system with a large collector might be a luxury outside your budget. Fortunately, smaller, portable single-stage collectors can do the job well, and go easy on the wallet, too.

Beginner with a small garage - what are my dust collection options?
Shop Vac with a 5ish hp motor and a bucket head dust separator is probably the most flexible. More on reddit.com

r/woodworking on Reddit: Looking for dust collection recommendations for small shop
April 21, 2023 -

My 11 x 20 garage doubles as my workshop and gym. I use a mix of hand tools and power tools (bandsaw, drill press, router table, and eventually a track saw), and dust gets everywhere. My current dust collection setup is a 5 gallon shop vac with a hepa bag & filter, and a broom.

Just spending time in there for 30 minutes without doing anything irritates my nose, so I think it's time to get serious about dust collection. I have a $1000 budget and am looking for recommendations.

I'm consdering getting both:

- a Dust Right collector
- an air filtration system I can hang from the ceiling (maybe the $300 Rikon model. Not sure how good the Wen ones are)

I'm sure some might think this is overkill, but I care more about my lung health than the $1000. I also plan on upgrading my shop space in the near future.

I'd love to get people's opinions on this. Thanks in advance!

Cyclone dust collection for a small shop - Canadian Woodworking
November 6, 2024 - More importantly, it also told me the two critical figures I needed to select a dust collector that would satisfy my shop’s requirements. The first figure, CFM (cubic feet per minute), denotes the collector’s capacity required to clear away chips, shavings and dust. The second figure, SP (static pressure), is the resistance encountered by the air stream and particulate as it makes its way down the ducting system.

September 30, 2023 - In my small shop, I went with the 13 gallon HF dust collector, to save space Portable Dust Collector - 13 Gallon (harborfreight.com) Purchased it in 2017, Does a good job for me. I keep it under a corner workstation. My 6 gallon shop vac is tuck away, next to it. I connected a 2 1/2"x10' shop vac hose to the HF hose to get to other equipment in the shop. As I said, works fine for me. I do have a Wen 3410 Air Purifier System hanging from the ceiling off to one side to capture the wading dust in the air.

September 4, 2020 - If you want a small taste of what a cyclone can do, get a dust deputy and hook it to your shop vac. You will learn a lot and still have a useful tool to use with the sanders, routers etc. Not having to battle the shop vac filter is a huge plus Keep it as simple as you can and still pull the dust and debris out of the shop. ... The first decision you need to make is whether to do a ducted system or not.

Small Workshop Dust Collection Solutions | RobCosman.com
The design principles for a small shop dust collection are the same as for a large shop, that being you want to capture the dust at its source and not let it get airborne. The big difference with small shop and low-cost systems is that instead of installing a ducting system that brings the dust to a powerful collector, you can significantly reduce space and cost requirements by bringing the dust collector to the tool producing the dust.
