Need help deciding if I should get the dwarf mini smart telescope or stick with the camera I already have?
The Dwarf and Seestar smart telescopes are very popular. They are popular because you can get good-to-great images easily for a low cost compared to a full blown AP setup. That being said, besides a few third party accessories like filters, they are not upgradable. So if after a year or two of use, you might decide you want to try different focal lengths and will not be able to do so with either device. As for your camera, it is perfectly capable and can produce good images, but you will likely want different lenses (the Rokinon/Samyang 135mm lens is popular for AP ~$500). While it is possible to image on a tripod, you will likely want a star tracker. Those can cost anywhere between $300 and $900, depending on the capabilities. Even the best star trackers have a weight limit and you usually cannot effectively put any lens or telescope on them with a focal length over 400-500mm. This means star trackers are best used for wide-field images: nebula, Andromeda galaxy, open clusters. If you want good planetary images, you will need to drop about $3,000 on a heavier duty mount and an 8” SCT. EDIT: clarity More on reddit.com

DWARF mini Smart Telescope Review
February 20, 2026 - I think at the price point smart telescopes are at right now, they deliver the ‘fun’ of astrophotography to the masses – and I like that! Clear skies ... How well will the Dwarf Mini cover 100+ Messier objects ? Can you use the scope to record variable stars for AAVSO ? Any thoughts on how this would do on a dark sky trip to Australia or Namibia?

r/DWARFLAB on Reddit: Should I buy a Dwarf II Smart Telescope for ~$375 AUD (~$245 USD) delivered or wait?
March 8, 2026 -

Hey folks, I want some opinions because I’m torn between just buying something now or waiting.

Quick context:
I already have an 8‑inch Dobsonian (love it for visual observing), but I’ve been getting more into astrophotography and want something that does auto tracking + auto stacking since doing it all manually isnt that fun, and the resutls im getting are not that good. I also live in like a bortle 5-6 if that helps.

Right now there’s a brand new Dwarf II Smart Telescope going for ~$315 AUD (~$205 USD) before shipping, and about $375 AUD (~$245 USD) including delivery where I’m at.

I’m aiming for as cheap as possible on the astrophotography side, so that price looks pretty tempting, but I’m unsure if it’s:

  1. A good deal at that price

  2. Actually worth buying now since I already have my Dob

  3. Better to hold out and save for something like a Seestar or another smart telescope down the line

My main questions:

  • Is $315 AUD ($205 USD) + shipping (~$375 AUD / $245 USD) actually worth it for a brand new Dwarf II?

  • What kinds of galaxies/nebulae are people actually getting with this thing (M31, M81/82, etc)

  • Given I already have a pretty solid visual scope, is this a decent astrophotography scope?

  • Is the default app pretty good? like for stacking, editing, locating things and stuff

Any real user experience, pictures you’ve taken, or honest advice is super appreciated. 🙏
