Which Database Wins? MongoDB vs DynamoDB vs PostgreSQL vs MySQL โ A No-Nonsense Guide | by Sarthak Shah | Medium
March 10, 2025 - DynamoDB automates sharding, while MongoDB requires manual shard key selection. PostgreSQL and MySQL scale reads well with replication, but writes remain a bottleneck.

Currently using AWS lambda for my application. Iโve already built my document database in mongoDB atlas but Iโm wondering if I should switch to dynamoDB? But is serverless really a good thing?

Depends, dynamodb is just basically a fancy serverless key-value store (with possibility to add secondary indexes and what not). If your app knows the primary key of the things it needs to fetch. Then I'm sure dynamodb would be a good fit. If you need to scan for data, then perhaps not.

You have already built it, so stick with MongoDB unless you have a pressing reason to change. DynamoDB is a very different beast.

More on reddit.comWhen should I use DynamoDB instead of PostgreSQL?
Use DynamoDB when you are fully committed to AWS, need serverless auto-scaling with zero operational overhead, and your access patterns are simple and predictable. DynamoDB handles unpredictable traffic spikes better than PostgreSQL out of the box. However, it requires careful upfront data modeling and becomes painful if you need ad hoc queries or complex joins.

Can DynamoDB replace PostgreSQL?
For most traditional applications, no. DynamoDB does not support joins, ad hoc queries, or complex aggregations. It is designed for specific high-scale access patterns. If your app relies on complex reporting, cross-entity queries, or evolving business logic, DynamoDB will frustrate you. It is excellent at what it does, but what it does is narrow.

How much does DynamoDB cost compared to PostgreSQL?
DynamoDB cost depends on read/write capacity units and storage. At low throughput it can be very cheap. At scale, costs can become unpredictable, especially in on-demand mode. Managed PostgreSQL (RDS, Aurora, Supabase, Neon) has predictable monthly pricing. MongoDB Atlas charges per cluster size or serverless compute units. Always model your expected workload before choosing based on cost.

PostgreSQL vs. MongoDB vs. DynamoDB
February 23, 2026 - PostgreSQL utilizes mathematical joins for complex queries and guarantees strict ACID compliance. MongoDB stores information in flexible, hierarchical BSON documents instead of rigid rows. MongoDB achieves massive scale by horizontally sharding data across multiple independent servers. DynamoDB functions as a fully managed, serverless key value storage engine.

March 4, 2026 - PostgreSQL if you have relational data, need complex queries, or want ACID guarantees (finance, SaaS, e-commerce). MongoDB if your data is document-shaped and your schema changes often (catalogs, CMS, user profiles). DynamoDB if you are on AWS, need massive serverless scale, and know your access patterns upfront (IoT, session stores, high-traffic APIs).

MongoDB and other NoSQL databases are better suited for high-throughput, low-latency operations and sophisticated aggregations. Indexing Support: Consider the indexing capabilities that are necessary for your query. PostgreSQL has significant indexing functionality for complicated queries, but DynamoDB has fewer indexing choices than MongoDB.

July 30, 2025 - DynamoDB integrates tightly with other AWS services like Lambda, AppSync, and CloudWatch, enabling developers to build highly responsive, event-driven applications. Its pay-per-use pricing model and managed infrastructure reduce operational overhead, allowing teams to focus on application logic rather than database management. PostgreSQL: Relational, strongly typed schemas, ACID-compliant. MongoDB: Document-oriented, flexible JSON-like schema.

DynamoDB vs. MongoDB: A Comparison and How to Choose - Last Week in AWS Blog
February 3, 2022 - MongoDB doesnโt strictly enforce query rate or complexity limits. If you send a massive volume of queries at it, it will try to do its best to answer the requests, slowly strangling your application and annoying your users. Do the same with DynamoDB, and it will just quickly lock your application out through rate limits and/or massively increase your bill, depending on the provisioning model you chose for your table.

DynamoDB vs Postgres - The Ultimate Comparison [2026]
November 19, 2022 - Other non-key attributes do not have any constraints, and therefore, DynamoDB can manage structured or semistructured data, including JSON documents. This flexibility allows each table row to have any number of columns at any time so that you can easily change the tables according to your business requirements without redefining the table schema. Postgres has a relational model with a well-defined schema, where data is stored in tables, rows, and columns.
