Might be a general question but let me expand on it.
I've been watching a lot of vacuum wars and it came down to the budget Larasar option or a secondhand Dyson. I opened up offerup and saw someone selling their Dyson V8 animal plus for $50. They said it works well but the battery is not holding a charge long enough to clean their house. I went for it. It was a bit dirty but I spent an hour and a half taking it apart and cleaning it up. It runs about 6 minutes before it dies. Is it worth getting a new battery? Or should a relist and look for another one? Or go with my budget option. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!
Happy Easter to those celebrating!! We have an Amazon special $100 vacuum right now and want to upgrade. Is the Dyson V8 origin worth it in 2024? Or better to save up for something better? Thanks!

I know Dyson is sort of frowned upon around here from what I've been reading. But what if I can get a new Dyson V8 Animal for $150, would that be a good deal?
I have a mix of hardwood and carpet and an area rug. Not that big of a space, about 2 rooms that will need vacuuming. The main reason I'm looking for a new vacuum is because I'm getting a dog. I've been looking at used Mieles but they're still a little too expensive for me.
The Dyson V8 is probably sill the best of the Dyson cordless stick vacuums.
Cordless stick vacuums are not suitable to be your only machine.they are designed for quick pickups and cannot do deep cleaning or continued cleaning. The V8 has a battery life of about 8-10 minutes onits highest setting which is really the only sitting you're going to end up using. Here's a video showing the power differences on the supposedly more powerful V11 https://youtu.be/cPFBCp_lPqw
They are good for quick pickups, however I would not recommend getting it with the intention of being your only vacuum unless you are only cleaning hard floors. They do not have the same power as an upright and especially with pets they can get clogged up with hair.
After just using my Dyson stick V8 for the zillionth time, I just have to rave. I'm not sure when I bought it and I'm not sure what I paid, but it is by far the best all-around vacuum I've ever had. The light weight, the ability to switch easily between regular and max. suction speeds, and the flexibility of the head and the various attachments make it very versatile. I use it on wood floors, rugs, and wall-to-wall carpet. The only thing I've ever had to replace are filters. The on-line videos about how to clean the various areas of the vacuum that get clogged up with fine dust are incredibly helpful. With that help, I've been able to keep the vacuum working well for years. I've never posted a Yelp review before and I can hardly believe that I'm doing it because I'm in love with a vacuum cleaner, but there it is. Hopefully, the newer models are as good as this one.
I’d likely get a canister, but it’s not something my girlfriend really wants to use. Our apartment is all hardwood and some tile in the bathroom.
Mostly dust and hair, no large particles lingering around in our house. A couple of dogs, but they don’t shed. With a coupon from BB&B, I can snag it for $320 ($342 with tax).
Looking to pick up a Dyson V8 Animal. I see Best Buy has the V8 Animal for $350 and QVC has the V8 Animal Pro for $299. I can’t determine if there is a difference between these two units.
Google Reviews has the V8 Animal reviews significantly higher than the V8 Animal Pro. Are they different machines? Or what? Thanks!
Buying one of these refurbished on eBay. V8 Absolute/V10 Motörhead is about the same price, V8 Animal is a little cheaper because it doesn’t come with the soft roller.
i have a tiny apartment (500 sqft). Almost no carpet (one shag floor rug), rest is hardwood.
Which one of these is the best purchase for me? The V8 Animal/V10 Motorhead both come with the direct cleaner, which i hear is okay to use on hardwood. But since my apartment has all hardwood flooring, am i better off with the V8 Absolute?
Price isn’t a huge factor for me, I’m more concerned with which one is the best value based on my apartment.
I would choose the V8 over the newer V10 v 11 due to weight and maneuverability .
Understand that it's not capable of getting a deep clean. So if this is your only vacuum (I can't imagine having to vacuums in 500 square feet. ) I would skip the cordless section and just get a compact canister. Like a Neumatic https://www.amazon.com/shop/performancereviews?listId=32E883T7NIQWH
Here is a video on why cordless vacuums can't replace plugged vacuums in 2019 https://youtu.be/cPFBCp_lPqw
Predicted reliability:
-
V8 Motorhead: 2 out of 10
-
Dyson V8 Absolute: 2 out of 10
-
Dyson V8 Animal: 2 out of 10
This is from surveying of Consumer Reports' 7 million members, gauged by those members who returned the survey who indicated they owned these models.
Conversely, owner satisfaction of all three models ranked 9 out of 10 in the same survey. I've seen this with several brand vacuums that are heavy on marketing and stylish design.
People cannot distinguish Coke from Pepsi in blind taste tests because the first hit of high fructose corn syrup overpowers their taste buds, but people will still swear one tastes better than the other, and that comes down to marketing. Or so I was taught in a psychology class, and yes, we did the blind taste test ourselves. I trust the reported reliability (repair rates) far more than satisfaction. Objective facts are more useful than opinion in making consumer purchases.
Bought the Stick V8Animal + on Black Friday 2018, it started making weird motor noises a couple months in, so I returned it and bought another.
To explain the vacuum situation in my house - I’ve got 2 cats, a roomba that runs often, an inhouse vacuum that I use for cleaning the basement - cats kicking litter out of their boxes and a Dyson Animal Ball that sits in the closet because everything else is doing all the work.
I run the stick around the house mostly everyday, sometimes every other for about 15-20 minutes. The thing has started with the motor noises again. We did troubleshooting on the Dyson site, cleaned it up and it worked again for a few days.
I feel like with all the vacuums we have going, I’m not pushing this thing to work extra hard. I love it because it picks up a lot of stuff (as does roomba and the in-house) and it’s super easy to use, making vacuuming seem like less of a task.
Anyone else breaking their sticks? I feel like it’s too expensive to have 2 of them crap out on me in a little over a year.
(I pulled out the Dyson Animal Ball tonight and forgot what a pain it is to push around a heavy vacuum that tied to the wall with a cord.)
15+ min 4-7 days a week sounds pretty heavy use for a cordless vac. I probably average 20 min a week on my V6 with no problems.
Do you have an extended warranty either through the Costco Visa or another card? That sounds like your best option.
Putting a Dyson back in it's box to be sent back to the depot is the biggest pain in the ass. Why is there so much extra shit in this box? All that extra cardboard just makes it impossible to get that thing back in there, so I usually throw it out on top of having to take the vacuum apart. Which hopefully the person didn't try to pick dog crap or something.
Hi! I just purchased a V8 animal from Dyson on sale for $300. It’s good but now I’m reading reviews of the V10 (on sale for $400) and V11 (on sale for $500). Is it worth returning the V8?
Note that I already have a dyson ball vacuum, so I was trying to be more cost conscious since this is our second vacuum.
Thanks!
EDIT: NO ONE COMMENTED YET BUT PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE DYSON. FOR $214 AFTER TAX..WHEN EVEN AMAZON SELLING FOR $500...SOUNDS LIKE A SWEER DEAL TO ME!!! THE REFURBISHED HAS A 1 YEAR WARRANTY SO IF IT BREAKS, I;M FF
Consumer ratings scores/charts for cordless stick vacuums HERE
I live in an 800sq ft apartment that is 75% hard wood floor (laminate) and 25% rug/carpet. I have a dog that sheds so picking up pet hair is needed, especially attachment for CAR. (my car is disgusting from trips to park)
Asked parents for help and they sent the consumer reports chart above. CS rated the Tineco S11 the highest for cordless stick vacs and sells at Costco for $350.
But I saw an add for a refurbished Dyson V8 Animal for only $209 sold on Walmart shipped from DYSON..not some spammy 3rd party. So a legit $300 savings for being refurbished and it says "animal". But in reviews online...it says that it's not a soft head and has difficulty picking up on hardwood and most of my apartment is...so that's a major draw back.
So what's best value/product...Dyson, Tinecone, something else? These are my requirements
-
Hardwood laminate floors
-
picking up pet hair
-
good at cleaning pet hair in car (my beautiful BMW is DISGUSTING from our trips to dog park)
My wireless V8 only turns on half the time, no blockages, empty cartridge. It started this about a week ago after using turbo for 5 minutes while I cleaned up a broken glass. I never use turbo otherwise. Any idea what it could be?
Hi, I am overwhelmed with how long it takes to vacuum the house that it’s simply not getting done. The vacuum is so heavy, maneuvering the cord is annoying. I work long hours and the house is 95% carpet so it needs to get done regularly but without this much pain. Vacuuming corners with my current upright using the nozzle has tipped the vacuum over on my head a couple times and it was so painful that I don’t let my 5 and 7 year old boys help with the task anymore despite their eagerness to pitch in with vacuuming.
I know nothing of vacuums and am overwhelmed by options. I submitted the below question to chat gpt and the Dyson v8 it recommended instantly felt a “weight” off me. The idea of a smaller unit my kids can use would be a dream!
Could anyone give some feedback before I make a purchase? ~$300 is definitely in my budget and willingness to spend to make this task easier but don’t want to go much higher.
“Hello, I weigh 110 lbs and am 5’ 6”. I live in a ranch style house that is all low-pile carpet. I currently have a heavy upright vacuum that my ex-husband left when he moved out and the weight of the vacuum is making vacuuming very slow and difficult for me. Can you recommend a vacuum that isn’t too heavy for a woman of my size to handle a large amount of low-pile carpet regularly? (Other helpful information: I have an indoor cat and 2 children and we don’t wear shoes in the house)”
A cordless vacuum is not going to clean your home properly.
I know it sucks (haha) to hear, but it's true; they do not have the suction power or the runtime to sufficiently clean a home. They're great for light pick-ups, but not much more.
Oreck vacuum cleaners are ~8lbs and are in your budget, whilst having the power to actually clean. It's not cordless, but the cord is long and it should clean well for a long time.
I hope this helps!

Ordered a Dyson v8 as my Henry as given up. Going to pick it up after work but now starting to regret my decision as people are saying I should have gone with a shark stick.
I did ponder a shark stick but I had a shark a few years back during the mrs hinch phase and it only lasted me a year!
Can someone reassure me that I haven’t made a mistake. Owners of V8 did you ever regret your decision?
So I was just wondering if anybody knows which one is better or the pros and cons of each.
I picked up at Costco the Shark Detect (HERE) on sale for $380 + tax. The roller head has the bristles and the fins, but not is not covered with the soft bristles like I saw on youtube reviews. Haven't opened it up yet.
I also saw the Dyson V8 in store (HERE) for $450. The motor head seems about the same as the Shark. It has more attachments, but I probably would only end up using 1 or 2 of them.
I've got a combination of hardwood and carpet. But the hardwood I don't usually vacuum.
The price is almost the same. I've already got a corded Dyson V8 ball from a couple of years ago. I thought about getting a Dyson V15 but not sure I would want to spend the money for one unless it is a life changing vacuum. I thought I would check to see if what people think.
Hi all,
I am looking to finally invest in a good vacuum for my condo. With sales in my area the Dyson V8 Animal Extra Cordless Stick and the Shark Stratos Cordless Stick are on sale for the same price.
Taking price out of the equation completely, which of these vacuums would you recommend more?
Some details:
I have a dog that sheds a little bit but not much
Not a very big condo so don't need a lot of run time
All hardwood floors
Thank you in advance for your help! I just cannot decide and haven't ever bought myself a vacuum so I'm quite overwhelmed with all the research trying to decide.
Both of these vacuums are on a discount at Costco. We have 4 cats but it is a big house. We have mostly carpet upstairs and hardwood and tile (with a couple area rugs) downstairs. The price is not important because I will be using a rebate cheque to buy it.
I am undecided but leaning tward the V12. I read that is has an on switch that does not need to be continuously pressed, but the collection bin the the V8 is bigger.
Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts on these two vacuums?
