I have a dyson ball and it's been a couple of years, and it would fall apart with a normal user. I really try to baby my vacuums, and it feels cheap. I have the tiny dyson ball vacuum at my parents home and it's still chugging on. Suction kinda is okay imo with dyson. I don't feel like it's amazing. It's just okay. More on reddit.com

Please forgive my ignorance in vacuum cleaners of 2025!!
Saw this on sale for $279 and decided to grab one. Haven't even opened the box. Since the 2000s I always thought Dyson was a stellar vacuum but apparently thats not the case anymore.
After reading some posts on this sub it seems like I may have made a mistake. I only have a small rug where the kids play and the rest of the apt is tile. Its a bit bigger than what I need but thought it was a good purchase that could grow with us and our living environments. Apparently Dyson has now become a cheaply made brand which blows mine as its $280-500 depending on when and where you buy. I loved the no bags and easy emptying aspect of Dyson's vacuums. But thats a pretty common thing amongst current vacuums it seems.
So did I make a mistake? Should I return it and get a sub $200 vacuum thats smaller and/or more reliable? And if so any recommendations? I don't mind spending the $300 on a great product....but thats what I would want for that kind of money!
Any and all help or advice is needed and very much appreciated!

Ball Animal 3 for $279 is a good buy if you want a bagless upright, but as others have stated - bags provide many benefits (specifically machine cleanliness and overall filtration). With a bagless machine, every time you empty the bin the dust goes flying… so make sure to empty it outside. Also - the cyclone pack will eventually get crudded up and start smelling like a musty dog. Thank goodness on a Dyson upright it’s fairly straightforward to clean it out, but still a project (on their stick vacs it’s an absolute nightmare). Contrast that with a bagged machine in which you simply… change the bag. The dust is all trapped inside, and quality machines even plug the bag when you remove it. Since the bag itself is your primary filter, every time you change it - you “refresh” your machine. Yes, there’s a nominal recurring cost… but bags go further than many people think they do, and some vacs have very large bags in the first place.

You didn't mess up. For that price you will be happy with it if you already wanted one. Yes, there are better and more expensive vacuums but it'll be fine if you got a good one. Mine had a weird noise after 5 minutes from the beater bar and I returned it and bought something twice the price to never had that issue again.

I am looking at getting a Dyson soon. I have a Labrador and I’m tired of my lightweight Shark for the upstairs fully carpeted area of the house. Anyways, I’m looking at the Ball Animal 3 or the V11. I’m looking to spend $400-500. Currently the Ball Animal 3 Extra with the dog attachments is $399 while the V11 Plus is $469.
Cordless is not a priority. My main priorities are getting the most powerful/efficient vacuum within my budget and longevity/quality. So which is it?

Definitely the Ball 3, the V15 is where I would consider it a full vacuum replacement. The bigger bin will be good for all the dog hair too!
