This seems to be a product defect still present in two of the models I’ve tried upon purchase. For me, it requires sitting down, pulling the part with the button on the top of the hose all the way up, ensuring the button is facing forward and then slowly sliding the top down. If I try to do it standing, I can’t make it work.

I am not sure if this is just how it is or if I am not using the correct technique. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use the hose on the vacuum as a wand without it constantly wanting to retract back in its collapsed position. It's almost like I have to hold the vacuum with one hand and the wand with the other to keep it stretched out and usable.

Yeah because the hose can compress to be stored away. It's not like your regular hose. When the nozzle gets blocked the negative pressure builds up in the tube. It wants to shrink to compensate. Try not to block the end if you can but otherwise this is normal. Sadly it's a limitation of this feature. The only other way to do it is to have a hose that is not compressible. Likely meaning you either don't have an external hose at all or you store it separately and no one wants that mess.

The original dyson ball uprights didn’t have this issue but with each new iteration suction got stronger and they never improved the hose design to accommodate. The fact they still clearly advertise even on retail packaging that it can be stretched so far is quite cynical. Guess it’s a way of pushing more of their stick vacs to get into all those odd places

I have a Dyson Multifloor Ball and it’s been great - until this weekend. We moved to a new home that has a new carpet and it just plain stopped working sucking from the brush floor part. It did for about two minutes then “stuck” to the carpet by being sucked stuck and wouldn’t let me push or pull it if that makes any sense. Then stopped spinning, and only sucks from hose part very powerfully so I know it’s sucking fine just from wrong area.
I have - checked all filters - clear
Zero blockages after checks
The floor brush piece seems fine but again had a moment where it super-sucked the carpet and didn’t let me push/pull it and then only sucks from hose part.

Dyson vacuums don't have any carpet height adjustment so they can get stuck to high pile or plush carpet and be impossible to push and pull and use. It's possible your new house's carpet is incompatible with your Dyson. Sharks and other vacuums that don't have any physical carpet height adjustment can get stuck to higher/plusher carpets. I would lay the vacuum on it's back and turn it on to check that suction is going to the head with the brushroll off. Next lower the head and turn it on to make sure the brushroll still turns when it's not on your carpet then you'll know nothing is broken on your Dyson. If the brushroll doesn't turn when it's not touching the carpet the brushroll could be clogged with hair or string or the motor could be broken. It doesn't have to be shag carpet to be too tall for a Dyson and you'll need a different vacuum for that carpet.
