No…and to further clarify, it is a V15s. It wont work on the V15 either. Answer from OkStudio6453 on reddit.com

Submarine not compatible with previous models - dyson
April 6, 2024 - Continue this thread Continue this thread Continue this thread Continue this thread ... It’s not compatible purely due to the software on the previous V15’s simply not knowing what it is. The submarine head is powered by a motor which receives voltage from the V15, it’s not air powered.

r/dyson on Reddit: Crosspost with Dyson community forum: V15s Submarine - is it really necessary to cut off customers?
August 5, 2023 -

As you know, the V15s can’t officially be retrofitted to a standard V15.

Let me rephrase it better: a 799€ vacuum cannot use a 150€ accessory that is fitted to the very same vacuum with an S at the end and with the same price and functionality.

This due to two options, and whatever the answer, they’re both awful for customers and for a company like Dyson:

  • they don’t want to

  • they can’t due to a FW update issue

Now the first one, although understandable, is a complete lack of respect towards customers. We’re talking people that invested good money on what is supposed to be the best product on the market and I give them credit for that, is a great product, but being screwed over like this is something I wouldn’t expect to be honest. Especially because I, like many other people, would have been interested in purchasing that accessory, even with a higher price. But being cut out like this, with the very same model? That is not how you do it. They could have opted for an adapter if they really wanted to, is not like it’s magic or something, where there is a will there is a way and yet they didn’t.

Let’s move to the second option, which isn’t better. This means a fundamental lack of foresight/planned obsolescence. Again, on a 799€ model which was supposed to be the top of the line not that long ago. The V15 is not even 3 years old and Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi weren’t exactly new in 2021.

As a customer, I’m disappointed and pissed about this situation because I genuinely feel like I’ve been scammed. Don’t get me wrong, I love the product and what it does, but I don’t like the fact that the very same product can do other stuff that mine can’t just because one of those reasons I mentioned above. In general, I prefer to buy good products, top of the line precisely because of that, precisely because I don’t want to be cut off for upgrades, and I want support. I got none of it.

I wouldn’t had any issue whatsoever if they had this feature on a different model, like a hypothetical V16 or something, it would have been annoying for sure, but I would have understood that from a company perspective, but not like this.

There’s still time, admitting to be wrong and going back on their steps would be highly appreciated by their customers.

March 13, 2024 - The aptly named Submarine has one big disadvantage though – it’s not backwards compatible with existing Dyson vacs, even the relatively new Gen5 Detect (though it will be from 2024 models on) so you’ll need to buy a new vac to use it. The first vacuum cleaner to launch with the new head is the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine, a special wet and dry version of the V15 Detect.

r/dyson on Reddit: Hacking a v11 to hook a submarine head
May 20, 2024 -

I'd like a submarine but have a less than 1yo v11 that I love.

So there are ways to make a submarine work on an older model I guess:

  • get a spare wand and drill a hole through it and run the vacuum on low. Extra noise and battery life is the problem, but it must work.
    Did someone try that?

  • figure out a way to turn off the vacuum motor while still allowing power to run to the submarine head.
Someone with knowledge of the vacuum circuit knows if there's a cable that can be jumped with a switch or something like that?

  • Get a used/broken body that doesn't suck anymore but still powers the head and use that. I'm gonna look on my local craigslist to see if there's one around.

Let me know if you guys have experimented with any of those ideas.
Thanks!

Won’t work , the submarine has updated software to recognize the wet head

These all seem like solid ideas! Were you able to get anything to work? I like the idea of shutting off the vacuum motor more than bypassing the airflow - for the same noise/battery life reasons you mentioned. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be too hard to find and bypass one line in the DC circuit to the motor, if you opened it up and looked - the only problem is whether the controller would detect this, and shut down because it thinks the motor is defective in some way. Dysons use a complex ESC-controlled brushless motor, not just a typical rudimentary on/off circuit, so if the control logic is looking for the signs of a functional, closed circuit, it might have issues with that being broken. The other issue here is the controller’s power to the head - as you’ve probably noticed on your v11, the computer has the ability to detect different heads, and shut the power off to them, separate from the vacuum head. It’s possible that the Submarine head uses a different current/voltage as well, which the controller has to provide. One (kinda simple) workaround would be to look for old broken parts on eBay/CL like you mentioned - but to specifically look for a control board from the Submarine model. It’s possible you could just swap it in, effectively “upgrading” the firmware in that way! Another (more complex, and yet ultimately simpler) workaround would be to simply remotely power the Submarine head, separate from the rest of the vacuum unit. From my own experience with my V15 Submarine, the controller isn’t doing anything other than providing consistent power to the head. It doesn’t adjust the speed, or anything like that. So unless the smaller controller in the Submarine head has some sort of “DRM” to detect and only work with a legitimate V15s head (like the security chip in a printer ink cartridge), you could theoretically just provide power directly into the Submarine head. You’d need to find out what the voltage/current requirements are, and then you could provide outside power to it in a variety of ways - from tapping in to the existing power system in the Dyson, to using an external battery (maybe from an 18V/20V power tool system?), to even just using a DC power adapter, and running a cable directly from a mains outlet. Once you found out the appropriate voltage to deliver, and a good power source, you could simply disassemble the submarine head, and wire in a separate, external jack to provide power through. Then connect it to your existing Dyson (simply for maneuvering), and run your separate power source outside the hose, to whatever you have powering it. I suppose if you wanted to get really fancy, you could skip all the weight of the vacuum head, since you don’t need it, and fashion your own handle/trigger switch design, around your alternate power source. Then you could skip wiring in an external jack, and just buy an old used wand, and run the power straight in from the top of it! Maybe buy an old broken vacuum (any model, with the same wand design/battery voltage), and strip out everything from the unit except for the battery, and the trigger switch? Then run the power straight from the battery, through the switch, and then into the power connector on the wand! Voila - a nice, molded handle, battery, and trigger - minus the weight and bulk of the vacuum motor, filter assembly, etc.!
