I tested 26 packing cubes on 14 trips – here are best ones to travel smarter | Life and style | The Guardian
5 days ago - Eagle Creek has redesigned many of its cubes with an angled opening, giving you more room to maneuver while keeping clothes in order. With my testing load, compression saved about an inch of space, although other options tested better (see below). I found the thin, lightweight material durable and the zippers smooth, despite overstuffing them.

Has someone tested the redesigned Eagle Creek Tour Travel Backpack 40L?
I also plan on backpacking for 6 months through Asia and needed a new bag that would be allowed as carry-on because who wants to pay these checked bag fees, especially as a backpacker in South-East Asia where you'll often take the plane. Skip to review or read: Short rant but people in this community are first of all really helpful but I feel as if there's this obsession around minimalism and packing as light as possible but the obsession should be around the adventure you're going on, not the backpack you're taking with you. Yes if you just invested in that separate sold hip belt and then combine it with your branded pouches you could squeeze out some extra space out your backpack but it's not that deep bro. If you really think it's the backpack that prevents you from having your greatest adventure then I have news for you, you'll never be satisfied as your endless search for perfection is what really prevents you from enjoying the moment, nature and in the end be happy. Almost done but one last thing, there's not a lot of reviews that detail long term trips in remote areas, I understand the digital nomads who want space for their tech but you can easily do laundry if you are in a city or touristic place, so yes ,you pack for 3-5 days with your Merino wool and say that you're able to live a whole week out of it but what will your double laptop pocket do for you when you're going for a 15 day trek through Nepal or when you go backpacking in Patagonia, that's what I want to know, can I one bag this. And God bless the privilege called money that people in this community have to be able to look for days which bag suits their travels the most but spending $400 on a bag, trying out 10 different brands, is ridiculous, you could have traveled for a year with the amount you've spend on your "perfect" setup. Review Still like everyone else I went down the rabbit hole for a week, learning about YKK zippers, 1680D Cordura,.... and just couldn't decide which bag to buy, I started of thinking low cost, maybe a TOPO 40l as they're often on sale or even a Osprey farpoint 40l (I live in Europe and Tomtoc only ships to the States), then I started looking at the premium bags like the Tortuga pro 40l, Aer travel pack 3, Peak Design 30l-45l, I think I've scrolled down the packhacker backpack rankings a 100 times but there was something weird about the Eagle Creek 40l. Packhacker only had a review of an old model and I was confused when not finding it on the Eagle Creek site and seeing a different bag being sold under the same name but then I came across your post and understood that it's a newly released model. part 1 More on reddit.com

Experience with Eagle Creek backpacks ? Wayfinder Series ? Organization Freak

Eagle Creek makes decent stuff, their packing cubes are pretty solid.

I don't know anything about their backpacks though. Personally, I think in general there are so many other well known bag manufacturer's that it would take something truly special for me to look at something I know nothing about.

Something like the Minaal or Peak Design bags for instance. While more expensive are known quantities and are quite tech oriented. They get rave reviews and you can find tons of information about them all over the web.

I can take a risk and look at some unknowns, or I can spend more and know exactly what it is I'm getting. It's a trade off... But in my mind, I'd rather pay more and know exactly what I'm getting. Your stance may be different and you're fine spending less and taking the risk.

But that's just how I approach bags in general.

If something really great and new comes along that catches the interest of a lot of people that's certainly something. I don't believe anything from Eagle Creek will ever be that something though.

I’ve been living out of it for 2 years in 30+ places, and it has been almost perfect. It gets barely ever mentioned, so I want to bring more attention to it. In the past couple years more bags came out, but there are still features, and especially combination of them, that imo still sets it apart.

  • Weight: 2 lb.7oz. / 1106g.

  • 40L is indeed very close to true 40L. Expandable to 45L; compression straps can bring it down to about 20L.

  • Comes in two torso sizes, each adjustable within 4in/10cm range. Most travel backpacks are too big for my 16” torso, so this was huge for me for comfort.

  • Articulated pivot point mounted shoulder straps. Nature gave me short torso and broad shoulders, and I lift. Which makes a joke out of most packs being too long and at the same time too narrow between shoulder straps. Pivot point mount is a really cool idea that works really well.

  • Main compartment is a big empty bucket. There are X-shaped straps to secure the load. There is a zippered inside pocked the size of the entire lid; it is a part of the main compartment volume, but doesn't take away from it if not used.

These are four main reasons why I got it and keep using it, and every other bag looses on one or multiple points for me.

I’ll brush over the rest of the features:

  • 600D fabric - 1.1kg is not because it's flimsy

  • Hip belt has a bit of padding and takes off some weight off shoulders. Not much, but it’s not useless. Can be tucked away.

  • Load lifters. You can make backpack sit very tight against your back.

  • Thick padding on shoulder straps and back panel.

  • Two lockable pockets on the outside of the lid.

  • Rain cover and back panel cover.

  • Side water bottle pocket (there’s one) does fit 1L Nalgene.

  • Padded and suspended laptop compartment.

  • 20.5 x 13 x 8.75 in. / 52 x 34 x 22.5 cm; if torso is not at full extension, H dimension can be squished.

  • MSRP is $160, but can be found for $100-$120.

Thing I wish it had:

  • Handles on all four sides. Two is enough, but four is handy sometimes.

  • Dedicated attachment points or daisy-chain webbing.

r/onebag on Reddit: Has someone tested the redesigned Eagle Creek Tour Travel Backpack 40L?
February 12, 2025 -

I stumbled across the Eagle Creek Tour Travel Backpack 40 while preparing for a three-month, one-bag journey through Southeast Asia. In terms of specifications, compartments, and quality, it seems perfect for my needs. However, I hesitate to purchase something that hasn’t been tested or approved by others. My question is: Has anyone already bought this backpack and can share their experience? Alternatively, what are your general thoughts on it? https://eaglecreek.eu/de/products/tour-travel-pack-40l?variant=55004416508282&country=DE&currency=EUR

I wouldn't focus too much on reviews but rather on your gut feeling. In the end it's your opinion that counts and not the reviewers. There's already some videos out there showing the bag in full detail to make a determination. The duffel on top of the clamshell compartment is a very unique design indeed but unique doesn't automatically mean useful. My stuff would be split between too shallow compartments which I consider to be less flexible to pack than having one main compartment like on the Farpoint 40. The duffel part is very awkward to open which defies having that dedicated front access in the first place. If you're interested in a split open type design take a look at the Cotopaxi Allpa or Patagonia MLC
