i doubt you'll get an advocate for purchasing replicas in this sub, however i've experienced both so i can chime in. i own an original eames lounge chair, one of my good friends has a replica. he has cats, and he knew it would get scratched up so he opted to buy a replica. honestly i was pretty surprised at how decent the quality is of his, but in my opinion the original is still better in every way. leather quality is much softer with an original, cushions are more comfortable for longer lounging. i'm sure it's different based on replicas, but the geometry of the originals hits the lower back better, my friend has a lumbar pillow on his lounge chair at all times. unexpectedly, the replicas i've say in don't have as much "flex" when leaning back or sitting, minor detail but, but it all plays into how stiff and rigid every replica i've sat in feels. the one thing that feels better with replicas IMO is the arm rests: replica arm rests are all much larger than on the original. while i think it looks much worse, it feels great. the price of an original is crazy, but in my opinion you're not just paying for the name, it's one of the best pieces of furniture in the world. My friend had one and my biggest takeaway from sitting in it was that it rides this invisible line between sitting down and laying down that I have never felt before. It is somehow both extraordinary comfortable and relaxing while also allowing you to be alert and engaged. I guess that’s why most people people use them for reading. Also they look nice.
