i doubt you'll get an advocate for purchasing replicas in this sub, however i've experienced both so i can chime in. i own an original eames lounge chair, one of my good friends has a replica. he has cats, and he knew it would get scratched up so he opted to buy a replica. honestly i was pretty surprised at how decent the quality is of his, but in my opinion the original is still better in every way. leather quality is much softer with an original, cushions are more comfortable for longer lounging. i'm sure it's different based on replicas, but the geometry of the originals hits the lower back better, my friend has a lumbar pillow on his lounge chair at all times. unexpectedly, the replicas i've say in don't have as much "flex" when leaning back or sitting, minor detail but, but it all plays into how stiff and rigid every replica i've sat in feels. the one thing that feels better with replicas IMO is the arm rests: replica arm rests are all much larger than on the original. while i think it looks much worse, it feels great. the price of an original is crazy, but in my opinion you're not just paying for the name, it's one of the best pieces of furniture in the world. I’d like to get an Eames chair for some extra space in my master bedroom for a little chill-out headphone listening area.
I’ve always liked the design and it would fit well with the overall design I’m doing with my home decor.
The original version is, however, extremely expensive just for a chair and ottoman. I also worry a bit about the size.
While I’m sure the original is very well-built, how do the various replicas compare in terms of material and leather quality? Are you just paying for the brand name with the Herman Miller version, or is it built better with better leather and sturdier materials than the replicas?
In terms of the replicas are there some that are equal to or better than the Herman Miller version in terms of build and leather quality? Are there any that match or exceed and also have larger overall dimensions (wider/deeper seat in addition to taller)?
