Photoshop/lightroom is probably one of the more beginner friendly options. Even though it's an industry standard and can be as complicated as you want it to be the new AI features make some things, like masking, much more accessible. There are also endless tutorials on YouTube to guide you through any kind of editing you could think of. They also have online editors so that you don't need a powerful PC. There are all sorts of reasons why you wouldn't want to use photoshop, their license agreement isn't very favourable to it's users. It's a yearly contract that you can't get out of easily. But it's maybe more manageable than a larger one off fee. Answer from RevTurk on reddit.com

Best beginner editing software?
Take a look at the Affinity suite of apps. The photos app is very “photoshop like” and is a decent performer. It’s not a subscription model, you buy outright. Don’t know what their upgrade cycle is like as far as adding new cameras to the raw capability. As I recall, kind of slow. There are a few other programs besides the one for photos. I believe one is a desktop publisher which does come in handy. I did the trial of affinity awhile back. Liked it. The progs are sitting on my Mac just waiting for me to hit Buy. I probably will just for fun. More on reddit.com

Should I pay for photo editing software?

Some free photo editing software like offer advanced features, but it is an exception to the rule. If you want to add photo effects or edit pictures with layers, you will benefit from paying for quality software. has paid software that includes a 4,000,000+ stock library and lots of extra creative assets.

Whether you pay to edit images or stick with a free photo editor for PC is completely dependent on your needs and what kind of edits you want to make. If you're editing images with simple adjustments like cropping, rotating, or flipping, then a basic free photo editor for PC should be fine.

r/AskPhotography on Reddit: What editing software is best for beginners?
June 19, 2024 -

Looking to start doing photography in my area! Wanting to know which is the best software for beginners for editing photos. I have a basic dell laptop from Walmart. So I’m wondering also how this program will affect my laptop. Will it make it go slow? Should I look into buying a better laptop? Should I look into using an iPad for editing?

Also wondering what the best program would be for getting photos to clients? Having an online gallery?

November 27, 2025 - Paint.NET is a free photo editing software that offers multi-layer editing, a feature usually found in paid tools. It tracks every edit, allowing you to easily undo changes. You can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and more, as well as apply effects like sepia, black-and-white, blur, or sharpening. Unique features include a 3D Rotate/Zoom effect for perspective changes. While not a replacement for professional software, Paint.NET is great for beginners learning advanced editing.

No matter which app you choose, you’ll encounter a few fundamental tools. Understanding these basics will make any software feel more approachable. Crop & Straighten: This is your composition tool. 5 days ago - I use it all the time when I want a quote or photo from the internet to share, but it's not shareable but I get the person's permission, and screenshot it and size it appropriately. The stickers are endless, even the ones for free. I liked the A.I. filters, but they have changed them, I don't think they're as good now, in my opinion. The image generator is superb ... A great app, easiest way to edit things and make images.

r/AskPhotography on Reddit: What is the best free photo editing software?
May 27, 2025 -

I just started getting into photography the past month, I have been taking plenty of photos but haven't dived into editing too much. I have only messed around with GIMP for a couple of hours, it's very overwhelming at times and I can't find too mny helpful guides that cover the overall basics, moslty guides for only specific tools and technqiues. Are there any other beginner-friendly photo editing software programs with a clean interface and all the basic tools you need to start? I would prefeer to begin with a free option lik GIMP but I am open to buying one if it will be good to learn on.
