Lothian - Edinburgh
September 11, 2025 - Purchase tickets in advance using the Bus & Tram app. ... With our season ticket, Ridacard, enjoy unlimited journeys on day and night services across Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Airport.
If you buy a Single ticket, it is valid for one journey only on regular Lothian Buses - whether that's one stop or the whole of a route, it doesn't matter. A single ticket is always the same price wherever you're going across Edinburgh, with the exception of going to or near the airport which costs more. The next option is a Day ticket. This is a ticket that you can reuse throughout the day, which is probably what you've seen people do. There's two variations of this: one bought through in the morning or afternoon works until about midnight; and a Late ticket bought after 6pm is slightly cheaper but also works on the night buses after midnight (routes starting with an N). There's also a Network Day ticket; similar to above but includes the airport and the out-of-Edinburgh destinations which are serviced by Lothian Country and East Coast Buses. Nowadays you can use your contactless card. This will normally charge you a Single each time, but if you use the buses a lot it will cap at the price of a Day ticket as long as you use the same card. (It will also cap at a weekly rate of about 4.5 day tickets, this isn't a specific ticket you could buy though.) This is similar to how contactless on the London Underground works. Here's the current pricing information: https://www.lothianbuses.com/tickets/ (All this assumes you're using Lothian Buses. There are also First Buses McGills (thanks u/originalwombat ), a different company, but I never need to use those.) Answer from glglglglgl on reddit.com

Am I right in saying that the day/night distinction is reflected in the N-prefix in the numbers. That is, a 26 will always be a day bus, the N always a night bus? More on reddit.com

Say I need to switch buses to get to my final destination, do I need 2 bus tickets for that? Or is the first ticket valid for a certain amount of time.
I’ve seen people get on the bus by showing the driver their bus ticket and wasn’t sure what that was about.
Thanks!!

I don't use the bus very often and embarrassed myself recently by getting on the bus, paying my fare with a tap of my phone and then standing about waiting for my ticket to appear from a slot near the card reader before asking the driver where it was! "You don't get tickets anymore, son".

You can pay for tickets in cash when boarding the bus, by depositing the money in the box next to the driver, but be aware that exact change is required, as the drivers have no access to cash and are unable to give back change. Paying by card is also possible. You can also use mobile tickets, on the Transport for Edinburgh phone app, or a top-up ‘citysmart’ card, which you can purchase in the Lothian Buses Travelshops.

Lovian Buses uses a system called a tap tap cap, which uses your contactless bank card or Apple or Google Pay. This is the easiest way to pay. When you pay by contactless, you automatically get the best value ticket as you will never pay more than five pounds a day or 24 pounds 50 per week. Just make sure that you always use the same payment device. Edinburgh also has a tram line that runs from the airport through the city centre and down to Leaf in New Haven.

I've recently moved and now I'll be pretty much taking the bus once or twice times a day, 6 days a week. What is the most cost benefit way of acquiring the tickets? Is Rida card the best option? Buying the ticket packages in the app? Any way I can cut even further?
Thanks!
