Edinburgh Castle gets incredibly crowded during the summer, so during July and August in particular you should expect to spend time queuing to access the museums and exhibitions, even after you get through the main entrance and ticket check.

November 18, 2025 - After you pass through the castle gates, turn left and walk up the Lang Stairs. ... At the top of the stairs, you will be tempted to stop and enjoy the view over Edinburgh. Yes, it is awesome to see. But keep going. Those views will still be there after you visit the main buildings. Walk past the Scottish National War Memorial, following signs for the Crown Jewels. Once inside, if you are lucky, you will have the exhibit all to yourself.

There are a lot of separate buildings inside the castle. All visitors and guided tours enter via the esplanade. There are certain areas of the grounds inside the castle the tours are allowed to go and stop. See this picture.

July 24, 2025 - This isn’t so much an Edinburgh Castle attraction you can visit, more a place to stand and wonder what you did wrong in a previous life to not be living in a place like that. If you’re lucky like me, there will be men in VERY fancy tuxedos inside drinking champagne out of tiny flutes, adding further insult to injury.
