North Berwick, North Queensferry, or Aberdour are easy day trips to experience a Scottish coastal town. Aberdour is my favourite, but walking across the Forth Road Bridge at Queensferry is a 10/10 experience. Stirling is great, the castle is better than Edinburgh and it's got a real medieval feel in many spots but a lot less "Disneyland" than Edinburgh. Dunblane is a commuter town. The highest rated attraction on TripAdvisor is a postbox that was painted gold. It's not a meaningful day trip from Edinburgh, though a tennis fan with a car might find it worth stopping by. Linlithgow is a personal favourite of my wife when she's visited Scotland as a tourist. The palace and loch is really cool, and she's loved talking trips on the canal boats. It's got a more local, less touristy feel and makes a good day out. The kelpies and/or the Falkirk Wheel are day trips I'd consider, though I don't know how easy either is by public transit. Callander House in Falkirk is an easy walk from the train station and might be worthwhile if you've got kids and/or a particular interest in the Roman or colonial periods. More on reddit.com

Train to Linlithgow - walk around the loch and see the Palace and the town centre. Train to North Berwick - loads of beaches nearby, the Scottish Seabird Centre, and fab cafes and pubs. Bus or train to South Queensferry / Dalmeny - see the bridges, walk to Port Edgar, walk back via Dalmeny Estate through to Cramond and bus home. Train to Tweedbank - see Melrose Abbey, Abbotsford, Leaderford Viaduct, and Tempest Brewery. Train to Glasgow - loads to do there. Train to Stirling & Dunblane - lots to see and you could do both in the same day. As another has said, Pitlochry & Blair Atholl are easy to do via train in one day and there's loads of nature within easy reach. More on reddit.com

Hi everyone. I'm form México and last year my husband and I visited Edinburgh for the first time and fell in love with the city. During our stay we did a one-day tour that took us through the Fishing Villages of Fife, St. Andrew's and a quick stop at the Falkland Castle. We really enjoyed it!
This year we are traveling again in May but this time we're taking my parents with us. What tours would you recommend that doesn't mean spending the whole day in a bus? By that I mean that is somewhat close to the city but is something you think it's a must see. Kind of the similar experience we had last year. There are some tours that just drive near some places or don't give you enough time to enjoy the place you are visiting because it's too far.
These are the options with the same company we liked last year:
-Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands -Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies -Glenfinnan, Fortwilliam & Glencoe Adventure -West highland lochs, mountains and castles (this one sounds really good) -Holy Island, Alnwwick Castle & the Kingdom of Northumbria -Rossling Chapel, Scottish borders & Glankinchie Distillery
So, any thoughts? I appreciate your input

From the US here and visit Edinburgh once a year for work. I've done the Highlands, Alnwick/Northumbria, and Stirling Castle tours as well as an "Outlander TV Series" castle tour, all as day tours. -Highlands tour was *a lot* of time driving! Otherwise beautiful. -Alnwick was just okay, Pretty coastline. The castle itself was nice, but very commercialized and tourist-oriented, Like Harry Potter games and Quidditch matches. -Stirling Castle was *amazing* and a true look at a real castle. The entire town of Stirling is great. FYI... no tour really needed from Edinburgh. Just take the train to Stirling and walk up the hill to the castle. Very safe, easy to find and lots of pubs and shops to stop at. The audio tour in the castle is very well done. I would highly recommend this tour over Alnwick. -And finally we did an "Outlander" tour with Rabbie's Tours from Edinburgh which visited several castles that were used in the filming of the show. None of us had really watched the show prior to the tour but all still enjoyed visiting several different types of castles, including the one where Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed. Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll enjoy the change of scenery! Good luck in your adventures!
