r/Paranormal on Reddit: Edinburgh vaults
July 9, 2024 -

My husband and I are currently on holiday in edinburgh for a week. We love a good walking tour, especially ones about ghosts or famous crimes. Tonight we went on the a ghost tour of greyfriars kirkyard and the edinburgh vaults. My husband isnt really into the parnormal or anything but he is a pretty sensitive guy (sorry hun 😋) and has had a genuine ghost before but that was years ago. The kirkyard was fine, the tour guide told us a few gruesome stories about the prisoner camp that was there and the murderers Hare and Burke. Then he took us down to the vault. We went into three vaults. The first was nothing much. The second had a stone circle in it which we were told not to step into as bad things have happened to some people who have. Our tour guide told us he had to call an ambulance once because a man who stepped in to the circle instantly fainted and hit his head on one of the rocks and split it open pretty bad. The guide dared us all to step in but no one did. I was tempted until My husband said "dont you dare" pretty emphatically so i didnt and then we left. The third vault was completely dark. The only light was from the flashlight the guide had and he kept it covered most of the time. He began telling us a story of the edinburgh fire and of a family who escaped down into the vaults. The woman and children were shut away in the vaults by their husbands who left to help fight the fires. They never came back and their families were essentially baked alive iin the vaults from the heat of the fire above. To save their children from suffering the women sliit their throats before killing themselves. The whole time hes telling us these stories my husband is pretty quiet but kept grabbing me and grabbing my hand for comfort. The only thinng he says to me in a whisper is "do you smell that?" I didn't smell anything but just as he said that the guide mentions people smelling sulfur iin the vaults which smells kind of like a fart. I look at my husband like 😳. The tour finishes and we leave and my husband is clearly shaken and wants to get away asap. He said the whole time we were in there all he felt was an ugent sense of needing to get out. He also said he felt a cool breeze on the back of his neck like someone blowing through a straw directly on his neck (theres no way a breeze can reach inaide those vaults. The guide even said that at the start). He also said he wanted to cry at one point and didnt know why, as well as smelling the sulfur none of which i felt. He said he felt cold most of the time (it actually felt quite mild to me) until just before the guide started talking about the fire and that was when he suddenly felt very hot and began sweating profusely. He was very shaken up when we left and his pulse was racing. I felt absolutely nothing the whole time even though I desperately wanted to. i totally believe him though, hes not the type to just make things like that up. Guess im just not on the right wavelength or something.

Im wondering if anyone else has anything similar happen in the vaults?

Fires in the Square – Parliament Square, Edinburgh
June 26, 2022 - All the other houses in the Parliament Square are totally destroyed and I can see no sight more grand or terrible than to see these lofty buildings on fire from top to bottom vomiting out flames like a volcano from every aperture and finally crashing down one after another into an abyss of fire which resembled nothing but hell for there were vaults of wine and spirits[24] which sent up huge jets of flame whenever they were calld (sic) into activity by the fall of these massive fragments – Between the corner of Parliament Square and the South Bridge, all is destroyed excepting some new buildings at the lower extremity and the devastation has extended down to the closes which I hope will never be rebuilt on their present or should I say late form.

April 5, 2024 - In this room, a man is often seen sitting by the fireplace. He seems really relaxed with his legs outstretched and a drink in his hand. A small, wiry-haired terrier-like dog sits at his feet. The dog tends to brush against people’s legs and he even sniffs at people. Its wagging tail sometimes is the only thing people see. The Vault’s most active room is the White Room.

Despite their best efforts, the sheer size of the buildings which were ablaze made it impossible for the firefighters to hold back the inferno. At its peak, as blizzard-like showers of sparks swept through the air and buildings collapsed in clouds of flame, the scene was one of apocalyptic destruction, as the Edinburgh Evening Courant reported:

Edinburgh's South Bridge and Vaults
March 3, 2025 - The vaults were filled in with rubble, both for security for the businesses still operating above on street level and also to discourage squatters making home in what was effectively a place to die, not to live… and so the vaults fell into the dim distant memory of generations past. However, in 1985, these long, lost, forgotten spaces came to public attention after a chance excavation revealed the labyrinthic network of rooms and dwelling spaces contained within. These spaces have lost none of their original atmosphere. They are still dark, occasionally claustrophobic and, when it rains in Edinburgh they can still be very damp.

Body Snatchers and Tortured Spirits: The Dark History of the South Bridge Vaults of Edinburgh | Ancient Origins
The 19 arches to support the southern bridge were built in 1785, and vaults, chambers, and tunnels were established beneath the bridge-top surface, walled in, and sectioned off in descending levels. In all, approximately 120 vaults or rooms were built beneath South Bridge. It opened officially in March 1788. Detail of Edinburgh, scanned from a reproduction of 'Civitates orbis terrarum', c.1581.

July 4, 2025 - Many locals, superstitious and cantankerous, refused to ever cross the bridge, going clear around town to use the North Bridge. But space in Edinburgh was at a premium, and shops moved underneath the arches. They were dark, dank, and they cracked, letting water run into the lower levels. Within 30 years of the bridge’s opening, the vaults were abandoned by the businesses.
