Is there some book like effective java, but updated?
Opinions on "Effective Java 3rd Edition": did it live up to expectations?
Effective Java by Joshua Block
Why does my Java 8 code fail to compile on Java 11?
Is Java 11 an LTS release?
Does Java 11 have records and text blocks?
Pretty much the title, I like the book a lot, but I feel like many parts of it are not valid anymore in the most recent jdk. Do you have some recommendations?
(Trying again, because somehow the AutoMod decided I was asking for Java help (???) and deleted my previous post.)
"Effective Java 2nd Edition" is unanimously regarded as one of, if not _the_ must-have book for every Java programmer.
A couple years ago I toyed with the idea of buying a paper copy, but then Mr. Bloch confirmed he was working on a 3rd edition, so I decided to wait for it, wait for it. It finally came out in December 2017 (after several delays), and I was really excited to get it. But... at the last moment I decided not to buy it, because of some valid concerns that others expressed: mainly, that Java 9 itself was too new and its adoption was too low to have "tried-and-true best practices" already defined, so it was up to be seen whether the book would be as "effective" as previous editions (at least when it came to Java 9 items).
But! We're almost on the last quarter of 2018 now. It's been 9 months since the book was published. We have Java 10 and 11 already, a different release roadmap... Java 9 has been turned into a non-LTS release, and I'd say most developers have probably decided to skip Java 9 entirely and go for Java 11.
So I was wondering... Are the Java 9 items in Effective Java 3rd edition any good? What about the Java 8 ones? Is the 3rd edition of the book still a must-have for Java developers?
I'm a computer science student trying to deepen my java skills and came across the book "Effective Java" by Joshua Bloch which was recommended all over reddit.
My question is: is it still relevant?
I just received my own copy from Amazon and realized that it's updated for Java 9 and currently the latest edition. As of today, Java SE 24 is the latest version.
