First of all, as the owner of Eichler Siding, I'm saddened to hear of your experience and I would like to learn more about your problem. We have used the material called "MDO" for the Thinline pattern for many years now, and have had very few complaints. Indeed, it is very smooth, and needs to be primed with a high quality exterior primer and thick napped roller so the texture will blend in better with you original siding.

If your groove measures 1/8″ wide and the space between the grooves is 1 and 1/2″, and the depth of the groove is about 1/8″ you have the Thinline pattern.

Joseph Eichler had the two most common patterns (Thinline & Wideline, see Samples page) milled solely for his developments. As far as we know, rarely were these two patterns used by other builders. This created a very modern look. It also created a unique problem in that local lumber yards are unable to stock Eichler siding since it is not manufactured by plywood mills.

Apparently you can order either paintable or stainable siding from Jeff Nichols at Eichler Siding. Also note if you are sourcing elsewhere that the original panels are not exactly 4' wide--they are little wider because of the lip that interlocks.

Typical Eichler grooves measure 1/8 inch, 3/8 inch, or 1/4 inch in width. So, having done this, you now have two important measurements: your 'on center' distance and the width of the groove.

I will be using Eichler Siding for a small addition and also changing the remaining front of the house so I do not have to match the existing siding. My builder said thinline is more durable, but I am concerned that it may not look sufficiently authentic.

We use the Thin Line from Eichler Siding. Again, it works great for us with the prep that we do. We want this to last. It is worth the investment in Time and $$ to do it right. Good Luck with the project.
