Hello everyone,
I'm looking to buy a corded electric 1/4" die grinder, and I try to always buy the best tools I can afford, which usually lands me in the high-end contractor-grade category, (think Milwaukee Fuel), but not in the industrial/commercial grade (think Hilti).
Problem is, my research into die grinders hasn't yielded much useful info. Virtually all the reviews include the same 4-5 models: the basic makita, the basic dewalt, the basic metabo, etc. Low-end 100$ models missing many essential features, like variable speed control.
Right now, it seems like Metabo is the leader for die grinders, but I know that they've had a significant drop in quality since they were purchased by Hitachi, and shifted their production facilities around, a few years ago. I don't know if they're really still the kings in the die- and angle-grinder space.
Right now, I have my eyes on the Metabo GE 950 Plus line, in one of it's many incarnations... even though I can't seem to find them available in Canada. Either way, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend other quality, well-made options.
Any thoughts/recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Metabo (the German company that makes high end die grinders) is totally separate from Hitachi/Hikoki/Metabo HPT. The same parent company owns Metabo and Hitachi/Hikoki, and for some corporate reason they relabeled Hitachi as Metabo HPT in the American market, even though Metabo HPT and regular Metabo don't share any parts, designs, or engineering. Totally separate product lines with nothing in common except for their parents holding company. Metabo absolutely makes top end die grinders. If you have the budget for one, they're definitely worth it. The biggest advantage with the higher end Metabo products, is their Vario-Constamatic technology. It basically modulates the power of the tool to keep the same RPM. So when you start really putting pressure on the bit, the tool increases its power and the motor doesn't bog down. You can actually feel the motor increase its power, and its a unique feeling that when you press harder on the tool, the RPMs don't drop. It really makes a big difference when you use it. Makes a huge difference at the low RPM settings also. Most other variable speed grinders have less power at low RPM, but Metabo doesn't. Some Metabo tools are made in Asia, mostly their non-flagship cordless tools, but as far as I know, all of their corded tools that are over ~$100, including their die grinders, are still made in Germany.
