r/NonBinaryTalk on Reddit: I never hear anyone use they pronouns for Elliot Page
June 25, 2022 -
Elliot came out saying they use he/they pronouns, to my knowledge he didn't state they identified as a binary trans man either.
Yet the media, and everyone only refers to them as a transman and uses he/him exclusively.
I think it pisses me off alot because everyone thinks their being amazing allies, when they don't acknowledge a huge part of Elliots identity.
I was really excited to have transmasculine representation that wasn't a binary man and uses they/them pronouns, but everyone categorizes him as a binary transman with he/him pronouns

I think that's a reflection of a broader issue - people prefer the "easy" option and for most cis people the easy option is to see us as binary and to use binary pronouns if they're given opportunity to do so. Elliot, as a celebrity, is especially erased by that because like you said, that translates to the media treating them like a binary trans man. I do see Elliot acknowledged as non-binary in trans circles and I've had this same conversation about their pronouns with friends, so there's definitely some public awareness of it at least.

I had no idea Elliot uses he/they until coming across this post! It's quite heartbreaking that I went so long without knowing... I think with the general public a lot of it probably comes down to a lack of understanding. It sucks that enby identities are so misunderstood

When I reference the lead role in Juno, do I say it was played by Elliot Page or Ellen Page?
Elliot. You’d use male pronouns too when referring to him in the past, even pre-transition, unless he specifically asked not to. Like “Elliot Page was 20 years old when he was in Juno.” More on reddit.com

How should I refer to Elliot Page when talking about his old movies?
Idk what the community at large will say, but when talking about the character, use the character's names and pronouns. When talking about the actor, refer to him/them as he/him or they/them (as far as I'm aware, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong). I can't think of why it would be totally necessary to deadname him, but if it does become necessary, say "Credited as", like IMDB does. More on reddit.com
