What email prefix is best for my own personal domain - eg. [email protected] or [email protected] or something else?

RFC 2142 reserves a few, like marketing, info, et cetera. Don't use those.

Otherwise, it doesn't really matter too much. You'll just want to make sure it's professional looking, but that's not a technical consideration.

[email protected] isn't a bad choice, despite the fact that there's redundancy.

Which email address is better for domain email? [email protected] or [email protected]?

As a bonus you can sign up for services using [email protected] and see who is sharing/leaking email addresses.

E.g. [email protected]

r/selfhosted on Reddit: A good "name" for your personal email with your custom domain?
August 22, 2022 -

Hi! I don't know if this is the correct place, but is the /r that can be most close.

I've my custom domain, and suppose that is "myname.com". Furthermore, I've some self-hosted services, like a blog, my webpage, n8n, Plausible, Home Assistant... and the idea is that this services use a specific email to send emails. My domain provider gets me only 1 custom email for free, but as you can send an email "as another email", my idea is to configure the SMTP with this main free email, and set "from:" in every service. For example, for my blog, I send emails as "[email protected]", for my HA, "[email protected]" ... Of course, this emails only can send emails, but not receive.

But... I want to use the main email for my personal communication, mostly for "serious" emails like work or professional stuff. So, my question is, taking into account that the domain have my name, and I'm not a company, but just a person, what would be a good "name" for this email? [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]...

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Edit: thanks to all for your comments! I think the best way will be use "contact@..." as main address (more general) and then maybe just pay for a dedicated email server to use all the other addresses.

Edit2: after all the comments, I checked the options for my mail service, and I found that I can create "redirects", that is a new email address but without dedicated space, so with this I can redirect this addresses to my main address. I didn't know this functionality, and I though to receive (accept) emails to an address you need to have a dedicated space. So, many thanks again to all :)

If you need an example domain name for an internationalized domain name, use one of the IDN Test TLDs and copy from the "URL of the test site" column. Recommended: Hostnames that include non-ASCII characters are encoded using Punycode. For example, http://مثال.إختبار is encoded as xn--kgbechtv. If you need a generic email address, use one of the domains listed in Example domain names and one of the names listed in Example person names—for example, [email protected].

r/AskProgramming on Reddit: What's a good/professional email address for a future dev when my name is taken?
July 22, 2024 -

Hey there!

Soon starting my second year studying computer science, really liked the first year, especially the programming classes (Python, Java), learning some C++ and Rust the coming year :)

We got recommended to start working on our Linkedin profiles during year 2, and I'm thinking it's time to get rid of the "ponygirl2005"-sounding address I've had since I was a kid and get one I can use in a professional setting.

I like gmail and plan to use it, but my name is already taken. I've looked around here on Reddit and picked up some tips, but I'm having a hard time deciding on what would be the best both for private use and not look out of place in a professional setting.

The tips I've seen on Reddit are:

  1. Add your middle name initial or birth year to the address. "jane.j.doe" is already taken, same with "jane.doe.05" and "jane.doe.2005". "jane.j.doe.2005" is free, but is that a bit "much"? I get the feeling it might not look professional?

  2. An alternative to the suggestion above would be the complete middle name, but my middle name is a bit long, and my first name isn't really a short "jane", would be more along the lines jeanette.josephine.doe, maybe a bit long?

  3. Adding something with the line of work to the address. How about adding "dev", or something similar? "jeanette.doe.dev"? Does this sound good or silly? Also thinking - what if I get into business intelligence/data warehousing, would a "dev" be out of place then?

  4. Using protonmail instead of gmail. This came up several times in other discussions. There the first few suggestions are available.

tl;dr - best professional email for a future dev in your opinion?

jeanette.j.doe.2005@gmail - "messy"?
jeanette.josephine.doe@gmail - long?
jeanette.doe.dev@gmail - is "dev" good? What if I end up in BI/data warehousing, still good?
jeanette.j.doe@protonmail - is Protonmail a good alternative with a professional vibe?
jeanette.doe.05@protonmail -same as above

Any other suggestions? Thanks :)
