r/freefolk on Reddit: All respect to Emilia Clarke, but her performance in GOT doesn’t hold a candle to Emma D’Arcy
August 19, 2022 -
Just rewatched GOT for the first time since season 8 aired, and couldn’t stop noticing the massive disparity between D’Arcy’s performance and Clarke’s. Crazy how much more pathos and depth D’Arcy could have brought to the Dany role (especially in seasons 7-8, when the writing simply did not help the character).
This week’s final shot of Rhaenyra vs. the face Clarke makes after Missandei’s death is a good reference point. Clarke overacts, curls her lips down like a petulant child. You don’t take her seriously. D’Arcy’s look chills you to the bone, leaves you horrified at the depth of rhaenyra’s pain and anger.
All to say - I wonder what GOT would’ve been like with a more competent/experienced actor as Dany?

Game of Thrones first aired in 2011. D'Arcy wasn't on the radar until 2015. How would she have been more experienced? D'Arcy is also playing her age, whereas Clarke had to play younger. The better comparison would have been Milly Alcock. I don't think Clarke is the best actress ever, but she did fine with Dany with what she was given. I don't think any of those younger actors stood out except maybe Gleeson.

Emilia Clarke, for all her charisma and heart, is a very limited and somewhat mediocre actress. I haven't seen any of her works that makes me go "wow, she really nailed it!"

July 1, 2024 - She infused Rhaenyra with such life; a simple dart of the eyes or pursing of lips could convey depths of excitement or boredom in a way that naturally drew your attention. That is, until the show aged up the characters and recast Rhaenyra with the equally-compelling Emma D’Arcy.
