ELI5: What is the purpose of the phonetic alphabet?
Considering half the alphabet rhymes with see (or sound really similar. I'm looking at you M and N), the NATO or phonetic alphabet was developed so that no letter can be confused for another. Even if you don't hear the letter crystal clear, you can tell what it is by what word is said. If I hear something like *ovember, that can only be one letter, N. No word in the phonetic alphabet sounds like or rhymes with any other. In case you're not familiar it's: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee and Zulu. Do you guys learn English phonetic alphabet in schools and is it useful for you at all?
No, the International Phonetic Alphabet is not taught in schools. The only place I've ever really encountered it is in dictionaries and encyclopedias. Now that all that is online, I can just hover over it (at least I can on Wikipedia) and it will tell me how to pronounce it. The NATO phonetic alphabet is something that should be taught in schools. I have to get people to spell things over the phone all the time and it's a nightmare. More on reddit.com

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a set of symbols that linguists use to describe the sounds of spoken languages. This page lets you hear the sounds that the symbols represent, but remember that it is only a rough guide. There is lots of variation in how these sounds are said depending on the language and context. For example, in English voiceless plosives usually end with a puff of air called aspiration, but the voiceless plosives on this page aren't aspirated.

2 days ago - Extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet for speech pathology (extIPA) were created in 1990 and were officially adopted by the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association in 1994. They were substantially revised in 2015 with lesser changes in 2025. The general principle of the IPA is to provide one letter for each distinctive sound (phoneme). This means that: It does not use combinations of letters to represent single sounds, the way English does with ⟨sh⟩ and ⟨ea⟩, nor single letters to represent multiple sounds, the way ⟨x⟩ represents /ks/ or /ɡz/ in English.

For example, without clarification, a postcode like “NP2 3BP” could easily be misheard as “MB2 3PP,” causing confusion. To avoid this, the UK phonetic alphabet assigns each letter a unique word, such as “N for November,” “P for Papa,” and “B for Bravo.”

January 2, 2018 - Due to vexing radio static or the tremendous background noise found in combat, early communicators found it difficult to distinguish between letters which may rhyme or sound similar, so the phonetic alphabet was established to avoid confusion between, say, a “B, E, or “D” when spelling or using letters of the alphabet.
