February 9, 2022 - But I’m sad to see them abandon the print version completely; there’s something nice about having material packaged up and easy to page through, rather than having to process a busy screen and jump around all over the place to consume information. They just recently auto-renewed my subscription.

October 9, 2021 -

As of today, the parent company of Entertainment Weekly has ceased all physical publication (digital only from here on out). February 16th, 2022 would have been their 32nd "birthday" since the first issue was released.

I used to LOVE reading EW when I was growing up. I grew up practically living in a movie theatre (since both of my parents worked at one), and then when I was old enough, I also worked there - and did so for nearly 20 years. There were always copies of EW around. Most of the movie-buff employees subscribed; hell at one point I'm pretty sure our theatre itself had a subscription.

Over the years, the magazine became a straight-up celebrity gossip rag, more akin to People or something (who I believe is owned by the same parent publisher, so that could be why) and it really went off the rails IMHO. It stopped being about the movies, TV, and music, and more just the lives of the celebrities who created them. Content was really poor, and I imagine that affected readership quite a bit.

Anyway, it was a good run, EW. I haven't subscribed in years, but I picked up the latest issue a couple weeks ago while strolling through a Barnes & Noble. I found it hadn't gotten any better than it was a few years ago when I last subscribed, so perhaps this is no big loss to the entertainment world anyway.

I liked reading it, too. Long ago. They even had a section on live theatre every few weeks, which was cool. But even before it turned into a gossip rag, they entered into some kind of an unholy alliance with Musicland/Sam Goody to sell subscriptions at the checkout that were secured renewal with a credit card. And -- according to someone who worked there -- employees were written up if they didn't offer it every transaction and would also be written up if they didn't personally sell at least two every week. That may not seem like much, but the Sam Goody "deal" was more expensive than if you just subscribed from one of the cards inside the magazine. That really turned me off of them, and I didn't renew my subscription (which I didn't get through Sam Goody) when it ran out. A few years later, I picked up a copy in a waiting room, and, yeah, it was all tabloid garbage. It's probably best that they finally decided to pull the plug, because there hadn't been any sign of brain activity for years.

I used to look forward to the mail every Friday because that's when EW would come in. As someone who wanted to work in the industry and loved TV and movies, EW was the perfect magazine for me. I read it cover to cover every week, even the stuff I didn't care too much about like theatre. I, too, haven't read it in years. When they stopped showing up at the checkout at the grocery store, I kind of forgot about it. I'm not sure what happened to it, it used to be so relevant. I guess the internet kind of took away it's audience. Slashfilm kind of took it's place for me.

June 6, 2022 - Yet, every now and then, someone will still ask me if their coverage is going to appear in print or “just digital.” That’s an instant put-off. As a PR “professional”, isn’t it the bare minimum to know who you’re pitching to and what medium they represent?
