What's the difference between an entity and a mention?
How I understand it is - an entity is anything that exists. A mention on the other hand could either refer to an existing entity or be an instance of the entity or could be related to the entity. Under different areas of NLP it can mean different things: NER: if you are doing Named Entity Recognition - you are generally trying to find a mention of a specific type. Eg: organization name, person, countries etc Here the words are probably used interchangeably. Entity Linking : given a "mention" in text - you want to know what "entity" it refers to in a given KB. Eg: in the sentence: Paris is the capital of France. -> Paris and France are mentions which can be mapped to "entities" - Paris [city] and France[country] in wikipedia. Here the words have different meanings - so you generally link a "mention" in text to an "entity" in a KB I don't have concrete definitions, tried explaining it intuitively/from some experience. Hope it helps! More on reddit.com
