I would think twice about trying to avoid the "heavy math" if you have aspirations to do serious data science. A good understanding of linear algebra, calculus, and statistics is pretty much what data science is. Right now everyone and their mother is trying to get into data science. The field is flooded which makes it hard for highly qualified candidates to get a job. I don't know your qualifications but I'm guessing they aren't stellar (I'm not trying to insult you here). I have a master in Statistics and a decade of Data Science work including running teams and it took me 6 months and over 100 applications to land a position last time I looked, which was a few years ago. I've heard the market is even tougher now. If you just have some online classes you won't land a position as a Data Scientist. You will have to lower your expectations and target a Data or Business analyst position to get your foot in the door. More on reddit.com

I think you are also coming into the market at the wrong time. I have over 10 years of experience in DS or related fields and its just difficult to find a job at the moment, regardless. To add to the concern about experience, the knowledge to write in specific languages is not usually enough. Theres a huge difference between having a degree in DS, and being able to perform in the real world. 6 months as an internship just is not sufficient to justify that unfortunately. If you want to prove you can do more than the structured problems from your degree, you have to demonstrate that you've tackled actual data science challenges outside your degree. Find some public datasets and do something novel with them. Find something youre interested in and publish the results. The internship will help of course, and make sure you highlight that. It can also be that you are looking for positions that require experience, and so you just don't have that yet. I find the default data scientist position is a masters + 2-3 years experience in industry. Junior data scientists, even data analyst positions could be what you need to get your foot in the door.
