November 5, 2024Purchase: replacement for infrequently-used Epson all-in-one. Laser or inkjet?
Following. Replacing an EPSON XP-820 inkjet that goes through more ink from the way too frequent nozzle cleaning, print head alignment, etc we have to do than our regular printing needs.
May have purchased a lemon but as awful as it has been I am cautious of purchasing another EPSON. Also super aggravating that the software renders the printer inoperable when it runs out of any single color cartridge despite that we rarely print in color. Doesn't even allow B&W printing. The XP-820 would be a great submission for r/assholedesign

The Epson that I’m looking at has a $200 price advantage over the Brother option. But I’ve read that laser is the way to go for ease of maintenance. I’m kind of leaning toward the Epson at the moment, because Brother’s laser colour printer options are pricier, but I’m interested to hear your opinion.
For context, I’m looking for something somewhat economical (over the long run). Light use planned, mostly for printing occasional tokens, PDFs, and terrain for tabletop games. Looking for something that can manage card stock, too.

My main requirements are it works with color, cos we sometimes photo print for personal use, and that it's possible to refill rather than spend big buck on new toners, so either they don't have chips faking the fill level or are easy to reset.
Scanner optional but appreciated.
Do y'all have any tips for me? I'm so so done with flaky inkjets and I've read some nightmares about some more modern printers.

For high quality color photos your best bet is a high quality inkjet with large refillable tanks. You want the kind that does self cleaning so it doesn't clog if you leave it sitting for a while. Laser printers are less hassle and the toner can sit for ages without going bad, but the photo print quality isn't as good. Text is better and cheaper though. Pick your poison. It's a trade off. I optimize for what I print most of the time: documents, thus laser. And if I need a high quality photo I send it to Walgreens down the street. FWIW I have a Canon ImageClass MF654CDW and a much older B&W Imageclass and they've been reliable workhorses.
