Epson Eco tank - Do I need to recharge every time I refill or only initial fill?
It's a one time thing. You'd only ever need to do it again in case you won't use it for a long time and air enters the tubes, or if you'd let the printer run out of ink completely before refilling. In any case, this ink system flush procedure fills up the internal waste ink tank (Epson calls them "maintenance box" I think) a lot. You can only do a couple of flushes before it is full and this maintenance box isn't even (officially) replaceable on many EcoTanks (=service center -> too expensive -> new printer). tl;dr don't do it unless absolutely necessary More on reddit.com

The little bit left over should be the amount required to fill the tanks 'after' the charge. And, it's fine to do so. You can top up at any point. More on reddit.com

I haven't, but I've used knock-off cartridges with other printers and can firmly say you get what you pay for. The only way I'd accept using another ink in my ET-8500 is if the producer was specifically a well known ink company in their own right, which I don't think is a thing. In the fountain pen world, cheap inks can cause damage to your hardware and they have far fewer points of failure than a printer. More on reddit.com

One was "make sure the ink bottle isn't sealed in some way" because 3rd party ink sometimes comes in sealed bottles with more than one seal. Another was something about a "charging" step that you might need to do on a new printer? I dunno. Third was "I tilted printer up a little and found out that the tanks were actually over full" Dunno what else to suggest. More on reddit.com

I just bought an Epson Eco tank and filled the ink tanks for the first time. I did charge the ink and printer is working fine. I'm just wondering if the charging of the ink is a once off thing for before you use it for the first time, or should it be done everytime the ink is refilled? I cannot seem to find the answer.

What model? The charging function is to flush empty ink line of air and you're expected to fill up ink when they're at 30% capacity so you technically should never need to charge again. As u/marek26340 wrote, this process dumps a lot of ink into your maintenance box (took 25% capacity on my L18050). Subsequent head cleaning process also dumps into this box. Some model's maintenance tank are user replaceable (ex. C9345 box for model L18050/8050, L15150/15160, L6550/6580, M15140/15180 cost like 35 usd), and there are counter chip resetter if you want to go cheap but you still need to replace the inkpads inside.
