Hi word-wizards and language-clerics
I am a non-native English speaker, and are genuinely unsure about the word "Erroneous". I feel like I can use it as follows:
"The Erroneous mechanical part was not deemed defect, since the recorded error identified on the part was purely cosmetic"
I am trying to say that there has been detected and recorded an error on a mechanical part (hence identifying it as the erroneous part, in contrast to other parts of the same kind with no identified errors/flaws/imperfections), but it is not so bad that it is an actual defect, since the part work. So it is not a wrong part either.
Does it make sense? And would you use a different word?
Thanks in advance!
The other day a coworker asked me how to spell ‘erroneous’. I instantly said ‘e-r-r-o-n-e-o-u-s’ because I’m a bit of a spelling nut. Anyway, just to confirm, I Google searched the word. Weirdly, it asked me, “Did you mean erroneus?” which really surprised me, because I’m usually right about spellings and I remember thinking it didn’t fit the usual spelling convention of such words ending with ‘ous’. Even the results ALL showed ‘erroneus’.
Anyway, a couple of days later, I decided to use the word in an email, and since I had learned of the new spelling, it felt wrong, but naturally I typed ‘erroneus’. It came up as misspelled. What!? So I Googled it AGAIN and sure enough, it said it was wrong and every result now showed ‘erroneous’.
Up until now I’ve written these occurrences off as people misremembering, but here it was, only a few days later, right before my eyes. Like I momentarily slipped into another reality. I simply do not have a rational explanation for this. Any thoughts?
'Erroneous' is typically used when you're talking about fact-based issues. It means incorrect or mistaken.
He made the erroneous assumption that the world was flat.
'Wrong' can be used in those situations too:
He's wrong about how much water will fit in that cup.
But it has broader meaning to include things that are morally or ethically wrong, unfair, or unjust.
Shoplifting is the wrong thing to do.
They are not interchangeable. Here's an example:
I reviewed the erroneous article.
I reviewed the article; it contained an error.
I reviewed the wrong article.
I was not supposed to review that article at all, but a different one.
