If you are an absolute beginner I would recommend : For Programming and linux: Youtube- the new Boston (there are SO many tech/computer language tutorials for this guy, I think he had a Linux playlist) Udemy.com- focus on their Linux classes or python classes, python is probably the most widely used language for scripting tools based on vulnerabilities you find. They have Linux bootcamps at well. Anything offered for mobile devices or embedded Linux is good (as you become and advanced individual, don't dive into that just yet). Eventually try to learn C, it is a low level language that like assembly is closer to hardware, and is what operating systems and even other programming languages are made of (again, only as you advance) Udemy is not free, but make an account and buy only on sale. Check r/udemyfreebies as they have affiliate links to classes where the professor is trying to make his enrollment quota ( that dosent mean it's a lower quality class, it's how the site works when professors update and re upload their content) r/udemyfreebies also has affiliate links to other learning sites, if it's free take it otherwise be wary of a paywall, see if it's been put on YouTube ( in my experience some of these classes are paywalled but when you enter you come to find out the professor himself uploaded to YouTube, I would never pay for YouTube videos). Pay if you can't find the content on YouTube and/or want to support the author. For Networking: Cybrary.it - this site is all network and security, and it's free. They offer learning by courses or by "career path" or "skill level". The micro certificates are worthwhile if there's a specific attack or vunnerability you want to understand more. Start with networking+ and security +. These classes are to get comptia+ certificates but use it to get the knowledge, don't get hung up on being certified. This site also offers a portal to a paid lab environment but since you are a beginner I would recommend making your own lab environment. To make your own lab: Get familiar with a hypervisor like virtualbox or VMware (VMware workstation is paid for, VMware player is free). Install several operating systems of various types. Many udemy Linux tutorials will teach you how to set up a Linux virtual machine. The process is the same for all operating systems. You can use software defined networks with your virtual machines to test end point access and host level exploitation from other sectors of your network. Understand software defined networks: The short answer is software defined networks are just like physical networks but you make it in software. There's the implications that the technology will reach a point where this would be the norm in databases and in it infrastructure. As of now it's a troubleshooting tool or used to see if a deployment will work well or not. It basically is like "virtualizing" an entire network topology. The software that can accomplish this is called gns3. It is free and they are partnered with a network monitoring tool called solar winds. When you sign up, make sure you also agree to get a solar winds license. It is a industry tool for packet analysis and network traffic monitoring. Other things you need: Books/reading: if you want to do this you are going to read. A LOT. Not everything has a YouTube video for it, especially newer vulnerabilities or security flaws. Like any other science, security researchers publish white papers, and you will have to read them. As you learn this more and more, these papers will be easier to read. Books is also a good way to learn the basics. If you're interested in ethical hacking, I'm sure you have experimented with "alternative sources" for obtaining media. Not advocating it, but that's how our field is, we vary in what we're willing to do. There are also publically available white papers for various concepts and tools. A nice easy one is the SNORT white paper. That's an intrusion detection/prevention system. Time: you WILL NOT learn this overnight. Not even over a summer if you really discipline yourself. This field always changes and you always be learning. It takes time. I've been doing this for 2-3 years and I still don't know everything. Learn at your own pace, but if you want this bad enough and have the time, just discipline yourself. That's the difference between actual hackers and script kiddies. Treat this like school and surround yourself with this. Put down the video games, and instead make labs and experiment and do not be scared to break things. Find other people who like this stuff so you don't let the loneliness seep in. Also, do not get caught up with certifications. I have two professors who work in the industry and neither have certifications. They are incredibly expensive and only worthwhile if a company is paying for it. When you sit the job interview, it will be a test and will be highly technical, or you may have to do a lab. Learn a lot and practice labs so you know this stuff like the back of your hand. If they offer to certify you, then take them up on it. If you feel you do want to become certified, get your CCNA and CISSP. You can go for CEH I suppose, but do not shell out the money to get SANs certifed. I'd take that money and get a master's. The cream of the crop is getting the offensive security certified professional certification. The OSCP is hard AF though, and is a straight 24 hour exam. Once you have that though you have street cred that never goes away, you'll be *other *ucking Mr. Robot at that point. If this isn't going to be your 9 to 5 explore bug bounties and CTF competitions. It's practical learning and the situations will always be different, which is true for computer systems, every one is built to different needs and no two are exactly the same. Hackthissite.org is good for competitions and practicing labs in an environment where you don't know the weaknesses you created. Most people on this sub will focus on network and information security. Don't neglect social engineering and hardware hacking. I can't recommend specific books on social engineering, but alot of con man tactics/ snakeoil salesman techniques remain true, crowd based distractions and collective thinking are your friends. The phone phreaking of the olden days is almost all social engineering as you had to convince a human operator to provide certain connectivities to you after you used the blue box to dial in to their connection. Hardware is more advanced and you will deal with this if you get into embedded Linux and mobile development. Some argue it's not useful as most hacking can be done remotely now due to the internet and interconnectivity of everything, but I would argue that having a deep understanding of electronics and hardware can help you make your own hardware devices and better write scripts to Target obscure devices, especially IoT stuff, that's what everyone is aiming towards now. A lot of hardware knowledge is needed especially for industrial systems hacking if you aspire to be contracted to do that work. Don't get overwhelmed and discouraged, but understand this takes a lot of work and it's more than browsing a Reddit sub or getting tools off GitHub if you want to be really good. More on reddit.com
