Euler diagram - Wikipedia
March 23, 2026 - Euler diagrams were first developed for logic, especially syllogistics, and only later transferred to set theory. In the United States, both Venn and Euler diagrams were incorporated as part of instruction in set theory as part of the new math movement of the 1960s.

17.9: Evaluating Deductive Arguments with Euler Diagrams - Mathematics LibreTexts
July 18, 2022 - We can interpret a deductive argument visually with an Euler diagram, which is essentially the same thing as a Venn diagram. This can make it easier to determine whether the argument is valid or invalid. Consider the deductive argument “All cats are mammals and a tiger is a cat, so a tiger is a mammal.” Is this argument valid? ... All cats are mammals. A tiger is a cat. ... A tiger is a mammal. Both the premises are true. To see that the premises must logically ...

Euler Diagrams Overview
The original application of Euler diagrams, as a way of diagrammatically demonstrating logic, is widely used in schools, where they are a great aid to teaching set theory. More academic work includes Hammer [Ham95], who introduced a sound and complete logical system based on Euler diagrams.

The Euler Diagram brings us to the same conclusion – The argument is invalid because Rex could be in either place. It is not for sure that Rex is inside the “Dogs” circle. To be a valid argument, the conclusion must be 100% sure. In logical arguments, if we want to say “It is not a dog,” we would use the letter d, to mean “it is a dog,” and we would put a not symbol, ~, in front of it: ~d means “not a dog.” This symbol is similar to the complement symbol in sets.

sentential logic, the sentence is logically equivalent to "If it's an apple, then it's a fruit." This · states a conditional relationship between two sub-sentences. We can now generalize the diagram method to a technique for assessing the deductive validity · of arguments, provided that the sentences constituting the argument describe how classes of · objects are related to each other. The Venn-Euler diagram method of assessing arguments

December 30, 2024 - However, these methods can only generate diagrams for a limited portion of all conceivable abstract descriptions. An Euler diagram is a representation of closed circles or curves that divide the plane into separate but connected subsets.
