r/NoStupidQuestions on Reddit: Where to get a list of all dictionary words?
July 13, 2022 -

I have an assignment due in a week where we have to create a password file of all known dictionary words with their hash values. Now i know how to hash the words and store it. But i am having trouble in getting a list of all dictionary words.

I was thinking to implement this by having 26 files for words starting with each letter. For eg, A.txt will have all words starting with A, B.txt will have words starting with B. with one word in one line

I want to read a file with these words, run a loop through it and store its hash in a different output file. For password: <hash value for password>

Please help me get this list of words lol.

Does anyone know all the words in an English dictionary? - Quora
Answer (1 of 8): I don't know whether anyone actually does know all the words in an English dictionary, but I do think it's possible. The person would probably have to be a savant with a photographic memory. Someone like Kim Peek (the inspiration for the movie Rain Man) could likely have done it....

If you are interested in looking up a particular word, the best way to do that is to use the search box at the top of every OED page. Example queries I can run are "Which words in English are borrowed from French?", "Which words were first used by Charles Dickens?" or "How are words added to the dictionary?".

That does not mean, however, that the words did not exist, simply that they did not endure. Most general English dictionaries are designed to include only those words that meet certain criteria of usage across wide areas and over extended periods of time (for more details about how words are chosen for dictionary entry, read "How does a word get into a Merriam-Webster dictionary?").
