Whenever someone talks about a conspiracy, it’s easy to make the cancelling hypothesis fallacy. Basically you make an unproven claim and you justify your lack of evidence by yet more unproven claims. "The earth is flat and all the pictures and evidence to the contrary are from agencies who try to hide the truth from us" Conspiracy can and do exist, but you cannot bypass your burden of the proof by making it heavier.

I am a high school teacher who is starting a unit on critical thinking. Part of this includes analyzing arguments for logical flaws. To try and make this subject slightly more interesting to a bunch of 11th graders (16 and 17 year olds, for those of you unfamiliar with US grades), I’m trying to find some examples used in advertising, by historical figures, and other figures of pop culture. I teach in Trumplandia, so I am trying to stay away from political examples (even though the examples from him are endless).
I thought finding such a list of examples would be easy! Unfortunately, it has been anything but. Does anyone know where I can find a sort of compendium of real world uses of logical fallacies to try and help my students make connections with the material? It’d be a huuuuuuge help!

I teach in Trumplandia, so I am trying to stay away from political examples (even though the examples from him are endless). It's too bad, because that's why learning logic would be important. Why not consider going even a little further back in history? We had plenty of illogic from conservationism during the McCarthy era. Also, you could take Wilson Fisk's famous speech at the end of Netflix's Daredevil series. There's probably some illogic there. There's also the Google Bro (James Damore) manifesto from a few years back. It's politically charged, for sure, but since it's been a few years (that's eons in teenager time) it's probably forgotten. Dude had plenty of illogic in that rambling. Here's another twist I learned: if you squint at a logical fallacy, you'll also notice that it's one of the established rules of persuasion and rhetoric. (Check, "Influence" by Robert Cialdini.) "Appeal to Majority" is called "social proof" in marketing, for instance. I think if you frame things as "Is this logic, or is this rhetoric?" rather than "is this "logic or illogic" when discussing political speech, you might have less defensiveness from conservatives.
