The thing to remember is that Excel functions are like maths equations in that they are calculated from the inside out. So always think about what is going on inside the most brackets as you work outwards. For example this: =IF(AND(A1="A", OR(B1="B", C1="C")), 1, 0) Will be 1 if A1 is A, and either B1 is B or C1 is C, because the OR is calculated first and then the result of that is considered for the outer AND. Whereas this: =IF(OR(A1="A", AND(B1="B", C1="C")), 1, 0) Will instead be 1 if either A1 is A, or both B1 and C1 are B and C respectively; again the inner function is computed first, and then the result is fed out into the outer function. What's your favorite Excel function?
INDEX. Super helpful when linking tables. Similar to VLOOKUP, I’ve just had less issues using it. I use this primarily to grab data points associated with specific data points on the sheet I’m working on. E.g. widget A, it’s color, width, whatever. When the tables get big it’s really nice so that you don’t spend so much time trying to manually match each of these values. More on reddit.com

What is the difference between a formula and a function in Excel?
A formula in Excel is a user-defined equation that performs calculations using cell references, operators, and values (e.g., =A1+B1).
A function is a pre-built formula Excel provides to perform specific tasks, such as SUM(A1:A5). Functions simplify complex calculations, while formulas offer customization.

Taking a business analytics course and we are going over the if function. The if function is quite simple and I can use the if function with the “and” or “or” function easily. As I progress through the class, I am being asked to use functions that use an if function with an “or” function within an “and” function or vice versa. Any idea on how to understand these functions a bit better?

I think it's easier to see if you put the intermediate steps in separate cells. Make those intermediate steps easy to understand. Say in B1: =OR(a1=1,a1=2) And then in C1: =AND(B1,G1="A") And then in E1: =IF(D1,"Pass","Fail") Or stick it altogether into one formula, using parentheses where we previously had a intermediate result in its own cell. Parentheses are short-hand for the result of a previous calculation. =if(AND(OR(A1=1,A1=2),D1="A"),"Pass","Fail")

4 days ago - Serious errors can occur if decisions are made based upon automated comparisons of numbers (for example, using the Excel If function), as equality of two numbers can be unpredictable. In the figure, the fraction 1/9000 is displayed in Excel. Although this number has a decimal representation that is an infinite string of ones, Excel displays only the leading 15 figures. In the second line, the number one is added to the fraction, and again Excel displays only 15 figures.
