Hello,

At work I have recently been told to not use the exchange server for EMC. I have been instructed to go install it on my own laptop and not use the server for those types of tasks.

So, I have been digging around the internet and believe that I have a good set of directions:
https://4sysops.com/archives/install-powershell-for-exchange-online-on-a-workstation/

I run this command:
D:\setup /mode:install /role:managementtools /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms_DiagnosticDataON

And I get an error message telling me this:
Global updates need to be made to Active Directory, and this user account isn’t a member of the ‘Admins’ group.

So I added myself to this group and I still find this error. I logged in as admin account and tried it. Same error. I rebooted and I still get it. I feel like I am close, but missing something key … After a few days I would like some help. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Mike

Install Exchange 2019 Exchange Management Tools on Server 2022?
You actually seem to have missed the most important list -- the Exchange Supportability Matrix :) The Supported operating system platforms section lists Server 2022 as being a supported platform for Exchange 2019 CU12 and later, so as long as you're trying to install from CU12 or later media you'll be fine. You don't need to install the .NET Framework, it's already preinstalled (for that matter, you couldn't install the standalone redist anyway, it won't run -- on Server SKUs you must use the Add Windows Features section in the role config wizard, or the Install-WindowsFeature cmdlet.) You can just run the GUI installer and it'll check the prerequisites and add the necessary features for you. Make sure to only select the management tools role, not the mailbox role. Run it elevated as admin. More on reddit.com

r/exchangeserver on Reddit: Turning off exchange server 2016 and working with management tools
April 28, 2025 -

Exchange server 2016 will not be supported anymore as of the end of this year. For this reason, we are looking to see if we can phase out the exchange server entirely using Exchange management tools. From what I understand, we can turn of the exchange server and use the management tools instead.

In the guide however, it says the following:

Source: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/manage-hybrid-exchange-recipients-with-management-tools

Install the Exchange Management Tools role using the Exchange Server 2019 April 2022 Cumulative Update Setup. The updated tools can be installed on any domain-joined computer in an Exchange 2013 or later Exchange organization.

Note Installing the updated Exchange Management Tools in an environment with only Exchange 2013 and/or Exchange 2016 will upgrade the Exchange organization to Exchange Server 2019, and performs an AD schema update. If you have a large AD deployment, or if a separate team manages AD, use the steps here: Prepare Active Directory and domains for Exchange Server to perform the schema update.

I am not quite sure if I understand this right. Does this mean that I can install the tools on any device, but it will somehow also update exchange server 2016 (running on a different device but in the same domain) to the 2019 version?

This might very well be a stupid question, but I need an answer regardless, so I am willing to expose my stupidity. Thanks in advance.

Install Exchange Management Shell on your Computer – MSB365
If you're administrating an Exchange organisation there are different ways to do it. The simple way is to use the webbrowser for the ECP. But what about PowerShell? The most common ways are to connect remotley to the Exchange server and then start the Exchange Management Shell or to use the Import-PSSession cmdlet to use Exchange PoSH commands on your local computer: $UserCredential = Get-Credential $Session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName Microsoft.Exchange -ConnectionUri http://SERVER.contoso.com/PowerShell/ -Authentication Kerberos -Credential $UserCredential Import-PSSession $Session This way works good and is recommended to manage remote Exchange servers!

A New Tool to Manage Exchange-related Attributes Without Exchange Server
April 30, 2025 - If you are happy to remove the last Exchange Server, but managing recipients solely using PowerShell isn’t for you, and you’d prefer to have a GUI, then I hope you’ll find the Exchange Recipient Admin Center useful. The ERAC is written in PowerShell, so you can check what it will do, but you don’t have to employ PowerShell to use it. First, a word of warning: Because the ERAC is local-only, it runs as the user you would run the Exchange recipient management tools as.
