It only replaces the JavaScript on the app. If you install or update a package that requires running native code it won’t be able to use code push. So that’s a pretty important one. More on reddit.com

OTA’s are great but remember these take an initial app launch to download, and another app launch to kick in (I.e first time installs from the App Store won’t have the OTA yet ) You can delay the UI and relaunch the app manually after it downloads but depending on the devices network, this can take 30 seconds and destroy a very important part of the mobile-apps UX ( it can also fail to download for xyz reasons ) TLDR: over the air updates are awesome but binary updates are preferred in 95% of enterprise use cases

been out of the loop; OTA updates are no longer free? is there a way to use expo without paying for the updates? just have to build new binary each time? or will expo block users from app once it exceeds 1000 MAU?

Agree with this. It will not work well for anyone doing a free app at all. OTA updates was like the main feature of Expo imo and now that seems to be used as the paywall

Hello,
I'm new to React Native and Expo, and I've been exploring the EAS Service. I find the EAS Update feature particularly interesting. From what I understand, it allows you to bypass the traditional process of building, submitting, and waiting for verification from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
However, it seems that EAS Update is intended mainly for small bug fixes and minor changes. Is this correct? What prevents us from releasing the app only once on the stores and then using EAS Update to deliver major changes and new versions of the app?
Could someone explain the possible limitations of using EAS Update in this way?

The way it usually works out for me is that I'll use EAS updates until it's time to upgrade the Expo SDK to a new version (I rarely even hit the latest version). Sometimes there is an additional new native package I need, but that's usually how it works out.
